Three American hikers who have been detained in Iran after crossing into the country from Iraq have been charged with espionage, according to reports by Iran's State News Agency.
Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, have been detained in Iran since July 31. Their families say they entered the Islamic Republic accidentally while hiking in a scenic area of northern Iraq.
The families, who have had no contact with the detainees, released videos in October that showed them dancing and singing before they were captured by Iranian authorities.

A "scenic part of northern Iraq" would certainly be my first choice of a place to take a hike.

Indeed. Possibly an Iranian crisis for Zippy a la Peanut Boy.
Although Obama is much more extreme, the parallels with Carter are pretty striking. Hopefully, Hussein is on a similar path to political oblivion.

those with western ideas will never tread safely in muslim territories. because of islam’s hatred for even those with slightly different ideas or values, iraq and other countries will never be fully “saved”, or fully open for tourism and industry.
it is by islam’s own folly that they are global failures.
normally i wouldn’t blame religion for national conflicts or border issues, but it is important to realise the islam dissolves all national identity.

Here's a tip:
the next time you get a hankering to visit a region of the world where westerners are reviled, hated and generally considered the enemy, just get a picture book out and look at it.
Idiots.

These three seem even more dense than previous vacationer “hostages”, since they should know better by now since countries hostile to the U.S. are increasingly taking our citizens and trying them for various “crimes”.
I am certainly not the adventurous type, but I think the only foreign country I’d feel safe going to at this point would be Canada. And I’m not even sure about that!

They guys picked a very bad time to get caught in Iran. With the on-going protests over the last presidential election, the government will use anything they can get to focus attention on something else.
So, what will Pres Obama give, promise, and/or apologize for this time?

These were bored rich kids and it really is scenic up there. They’ve already been to every place you’d choose to go.
Iran will set them free “out of good will.” Or they will hang them and we’ll do nothing.

"Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, have been detained in Iran since July 31. The idea that they didn't know where they were is far fetched to the point of being laughable.

Probably trying to make contact with like-minded anti-Americans.
When I was in college, we had one professor whose expertise was Marxist philosophy. He took a sabbatical to then-communist Poland. Apparently, he expressed himself heretically, because he wound up being arrested and jailed. I thought the irony was quite funny.

I wouldn’t doubt that they see no problems with trying to compromise the US through hostage negotiations. Paging Jess Jackson!
What appears to be stupid is their key to fame and a chance to get the US to compromise on stated positions.

And ObaMao shivers under his desk during his rare and short visits to the Oval Office. But mostly, he is only to be found out on the Golf Course, or out on some Million Dollar hot date with his Wife and entourage. Or, he is on some International Speaking engagement to impress the European Socialists.
In the mean time, Iran is about to announce a Nuke and a delivery system and Afghanistan/Pakistan is deteriorating by the minute.
