The police officer who brought down a gunman after he went on a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood Army base was on the way to have her car repaired when she heard a report over a police radio that someone was shooting people in a center where soldiers are processed before they are deployed abroad, authorities said on Friday.
As she pulled up to the center, the officer, Kimberly Munley, spotted the gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, brandishing a pistol and chasing a wounded soldier outside the building, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at the base.
Sergeant Munley bolted from her car and shot at Major Hasan. He turned toward her and began to fire. She ran toward him, continuing to fire, and both she and the gunmen went down with several bullet wounds, Mr. Medley said.***
Sergeant Munley, who is 34, is an expert in firearms and a member of the SWAT team for the civilian police department on the base, officials said.
She received two wounds in each thigh and one to her right wrist. The bases fire chief applied torniquets to stop her bleeding, and she was taken to a hospital...where she was reported in stable condition on Tuesday
Sergeant Munley joined the police force on the sprawling base in January 2008 after a career in the Army. Mr. Medley described her as highly trained, and said she had received specific training in a tactic called active shooter protocol, which was intended for the kind of situation she encountered on Thursday.
She lives with her husband, who is a soldier, in a tidy community of ranch homes on the south side of Killeen. Her neighbors described her as quiet and friendly. Her husband...is currently assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

I trust her husband has his travel chit OK’d to leave Fort Bragg and get to Hood.
Hope the wounds are superficial. That’s not a good place to be shot.
Wrist? hope its a flesh wound.
Wonder where the JO was headed. Thanks Officer for stopping him.
God speed your recovery.
Here’s hoping he gets emergency leave and is flown to her side ASAP...
Barry is not using Air Force One...
Very brave lady. A true hero (heroin?) and patriot. How long before the Left begins trying to dig up dirt on her?
I do too. My level of respect for the on-post police just went way up because of her.
LOL herionE, not heroin.
sorry ...
and I can’t speell iether ;-)
one more try
heroine
there. better.
So she was off duty? Hadn’t heard that.
Dang!
Brass balls from a woman.
By the way, I wonder what they mean about being a firearms expert. Does that mean her qualification score? If that's the case, I'm an expert because I qualified at 38 of 40 targets and am eligible to wear my "expert" marksmanship badge. But, I'm not an expert in the way the media is portraying it.

She deserves a huge bonus.
Okay, thank you. I thought ‘heroin’ looked wrong!
the rounds from his weapon are designed to pierce with not-so-much knockdown power. Probably with straight through, making a clean hole.
If so, thats a good, less tissue damage that way.
So much for the argument that Off Duty policemen shouldn’t carry. People were giving the Special Policeman that took out the Knife Weilding Lunatic at a Boston Medical Building last week a hard time for having his gun on him.
You can’T get braver than that- keep closing the distance until the job is done.
She’s a Texas woman!!!
“Very brave lady. A true hero (heroin?) and patriot”
Ditto that. Good job young lady. Best wishes for fast recovery.
From the story and statements of his superiors, she is apparently well trained in tactical weapons combat. That’s why she was rushing towards him and able to hit him in the head while under fire.
Typical white person bitterly clinging to her guns profiling a presumed innocent Muslim, right Barry?
Brave lady.
The first stories talk about her being with her partner when they arrived, now she’s arrived while off duty.....the story keeps getting larger and more heroic. I hope it is all true; she deserves a congressional medal if true. But, it just stinks of political correctness which is killing the leadership skills in our Army right now.
This is what this country needs. We need it among our police and our military. We need it in our conservative politicians. We need this in ourselves as we engage this corrupt culture and leftwing agendas in our communities and institutions. Run toward them. Continue to fire!
Well, *somebody* put the guy in a coma.
Maybe her, maybe one of the dozen other officers and MPs that arrived around the exact same time. Believe me, on base, when the MPs and Dept. of Army Police finally get some action, they go all out with lights and siren (almost like the fire departments and ambulance services in most towns) and the whole shebang. I’m sure, being where that center is on Fort Hood, there were a dozen MPs and D of A cops on scene in seconds of the call finally getting through.
What a brave officer. May God take care of her.
Hero
I feel a tingling up my leg - always had a soft spot for a gal that can handle a 9mm ...
Article did say that she was a member of the SWAT team. Considering that while running and while being fired up, she still hit and brought down the target .... I’d say that would qualify her as a not only an expert but an expert under pressure.
I’ve see a lot of experts fall to pieces with just their instructor yelling at them on the range.
Wrist wounds that need tourniquets often need lots of reconstructive surgery. Prayers for her recovery.

“How long before the Left begins trying to dig up dirt on her?”
The NYT article indicates that she is ONLY a high school graduate and did NOT attend H-a-r-v-a-r-d to how much more dirt does one need?
Not much flesh in the wrist. And lots of little bones.

You did target shooting.. She brought a terrorist down. Is that good enough??
That’s what I hope is not the case.
She apparently is a valuble member of the LEO.
Actually, she's from North Carolina, but we're pretty tough too.
So, she's smarter than a Harvard Graduate, then.
“Here’s hoping she’s up and about really soon.”
I read in another article that she was on the phone reassuring other officers she was OK and trying to find out how many were hurt or killed shortly after she got out of surgery. Tough lady.
In the same article her mother was quoted as saying she was shot three times, once in the wrist and once in each leg. I think the “two wounds” in each leg were entrance and exit wounds. The surgery was for a damaged artery, I’m guessing femoral which would explain the tourniquet.
Thank goodness she got him before he killed many more.
Holy smoke. This one wasn’t Hollywood, this one was toe to toe, shoot until somebody goes down. My unreserved admiration for the victor. God bless her and protect her.
Is she white? Has anyone seen her picture? Who cares anyway? God bless her for saving so many lives!
see above, #47.
Been there, done that. And less than complete success. Hope your end result is better.
