My wife said that soliders and officers on base were not allowed to carry firearms. That surprised me, as I thought officers always had their sidearms.

I guess a gun free zone has struck again in tragedy.

No one on a base, except MPs or civilian law enforcement working for the federal government carry weapons on base. Even when troops are moving around with their weapons, going on field problems, too and from rifle ranges, they do not have ammo. Ammo is carefully controlled by the arms people. You cannot carry a private gun on base, as the base is federal not state property.
