Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that the speaker will not allow the final language of the health care to be posted online for 72 hours before bringing the bill to a vote on the House floor, despite her September 24 statement that she was "absolutely" committed to doing so.
House members are still negotiating important issues in the bill--whether it will provide taxpayer-funding for abortions, for example. Pelosi is pushing for a Saturday House vote, and a number of big changes will be introduced, likely less than 24 hours before the vote takes place (if in fact it does). The Rules Committee hasn't yet released its resolution, or rule, that must be passed before the bill can move from committee to the floor. The rule will set the terms of debate and determine what amendments are in order.
It seems likely that the rule will allow very few, if any, up-or-down votes on amendments on the House floor. Rather, the rule will include a series of amendments that will all be adopted at once if the rule passes.
On September 24, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told THE WEEKLY STANDARD that she was "absolutely" committed to putting the text of the final House bill online for 72 hours before the House votes:
TWS: Madam Speaker, do you support the measure to put the final House bill online for 72 hours before it's voted on at the very end?
PELOSI: Absolutely. Without question.
But tonight, when asked if Speaker Pelosi will leave the bill online for 72 hours after we see what's in the rule, Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly replied in an email: "No; [the] pledge was to have managers amendment online for 72 hours, and we will do that."
Apparently Pelosi's agreement to leave the "final" bill online "at the very end" of the process wasn't such a straightforward pledge.
Democrats know they can say absolutely anything and get away with it. The State-Run Media won’t call them on it.
This “woman” should be in jail for the things she has done to this country.
I plead with everyone who hasn’t already, to call their congressmen. That’s about all we can do to fight back, today.
They moved the vote to Sunday. After the Job numbers it might not be a vote.
Has there ever been a less honorable group in charge of our government?
Its absolutely stunning.
Every day that it gets moved is a victory. Not a huge one, but lets keep pushing this thing down the calendar. I’ve been reading that it won’t get through the Senate this year. Obama wanted it done back in JUNE.
When a headline reads “Pelosi Breaks Pledge . . . “, it’s NOT news but standard operating procedure for the American liberal majority. Her supporters want these federal sellout programs.
It’s won’t help to call Democrat congressmen: they are precommitted to American destruction and cheered by millions of misguided American citizens and noncitizens as well.
Ain't gone be yo low down dog no more. . . .Sleepy Labeef
Most of these “lawmakers” would, I believe, gladly surrender their carrers in the advancement of their “greater good”: socialism.
I’m so shocked and surprised! </sarc>
People in CA if they know who she is would crown Pelosi the “Queen”.
Back in the old days, when words actually meant something, "breaking a pledge" meant LYING.
My understand is the the bluedogs in the Midwest are scared of facing the voters back home. We’re talking about the congressmen that represent average Americans and know about farmers and small businessmen and have been paying attention to the political climate on the mainstreet in their hometowns. They heard the outrage at the Townhalls this summer. Their constituents are calling and writing them. Their constituents are mad as hell. We have to keep up the pressure.
Between 25,000-50,000 showed up on the Mall yesterday. There is power in the all of us yelling, “KILL THE BILL!” at once. Don’t give up.
Bookmarking for my call to Congress later today.
i'm shocked!!!
