Lobbyists are quitting the business at a record pace, according to a study released Monday.
Over 1,400 lobbyists "deregistered" with Congress in the second quarter of 2009, according to a study conducted jointly by the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) and OMB Watch.
Typically, only a few hundred lobbyists quit each quarter.
The giant spike in resignations came just after the Obama administration instituted strict new rules on lobbyist activity. The White House banned employees from receiving gifts from lobbyists and announced that any lobbyist hired by the executive branch could not work on the same issues on which he or she lobbied.
While we cant draw a direct link between the presidents executive order and the increased pace of terminations during the second quarter of 2009, we can say that they came at a most controversial time, said Lee Mason, director of Nonprofit Speech Rights for OMB Watch.
The report also found that since January 2008, lobbyists are quitting at a faster pace than they are being replaced.
Over 18,000 lobbyists have deregistered, while only 15,310 have registered.
But the study's authors warn that not all of the deregistered lobbyists may actually be out of business.
"At the federal level, many people working in the lobbying industry are not registered lobbyists, instead adopting titles such as 'senior adviser' or other executive monikers, thereby avoiding federal disclosure requirements under the Lobbying Disclosure Act," CRP and OMB Watch said in a statement.
Then you can lobby without lobbying. What a concept. Worthy of a waiver.
I would wager that many of those quitting don’t even go to work for the administration because they now own it.
That’s because, they all became gainfully employed, in the Federal Government.
Geez, only 28.61 per Congressman and Senator now!
You don’t need lobbyists when businesses belong to the government. Instead, you need Czars and Comissars.
They are all working in the WH!
They all have jobs inside the White House
They’re just going underground.
When they get the numbers, do they also have names attached?
Is anyone going to follow these people/money trails?
That's what I figured. Obama will claim a victory, while sliminess and corruption will be greater than ever.
Federal employees have long been forbidden from accepting gifts from propective contractors — not sure if the same rules apply to White House employees.
Now, does the 18000 since January 2008 mean 18000 divided by 7 quarters ~= 2500 per quarter?
On the other hand, they imply that the 1400 in the 2nd quarter of ‘09 is high, so possibly what is meant that of the loss of (15310 - 18000) = 2690 since January ‘08, about half the loss occurred in the 2nd quarter of ‘09?
Have previous recessions incurred a similar loss of lobbyists?
