11 members of Hizb ut-Tahrir extremist organization convicted in Tatarstan

SNIPPET: The Supreme Court of Tatarstan found 12 activists of the Kazan division of the international terrorist organization Islamic Liberation Party (Hizb ut-Tahrir) guilty of extremism.

"Seven men, including Tajik citizen Dzhurayev and six Russians, have received four to eight years in a penal colony," court press secretary Natalya Loseva told Interfax.

Four other Kazan residents have received suspended sentences of three years and six months to five years in prison."

I’ve been there. It’s on the upper reaches of the Volga, where they call it the Kama River. Kazan was the capital of the Golden Horde. Previously it had been settled by Huns, who built Veliky Bulgar there. It’s about 900 miles east of Moscow.

Tatarstan is part of Russian Federation (see green #13 on the map.) Its borders are merely lines on the map and there are no troops anywhere close.

Tatars are Muslims, by the way:

Tatarstan was conquered by the troops of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible in the 1550s, with Kazan being taken in 1552. Some Tatars were forcibly converted to Christianity and cathedrals were built in Kazan; by 1593 all mosques in the area were destroyed. The Russian government forbade the construction of mosques, a prohibition that was not lifted until the 18th century by Catherine II. The first mosque to be rebuilt under Catherine's auspices was constructed in 1766-1770.

As it seems, Russian Empire had some liberal rulers too.

The mix of the population there is about 50/50 Russians and Tatars. The Tatars are a Turkic people, very westernized, secular Muslims. They have dark hair and are olive complected. But some Tatars can only be distinguished from Russians when you hear them speak. I met some wonderful people there. It’s rather Midwestern in character.
