Mystery deepens as seventh sneaker-clad foot washes up on B.C. shores

British Columbia’s waters have washed ashore yet another disarticulated foot.

Two men walking along the beach at No. 6 Road and Triangle Road in Richmond found the sneaker-clad foot lying in the sand Tuesday night. Inside the size 8 1/2 white Nike running shoe was the decomposing remains of a human right foot. It’s the seventh sneaker-clad discovered on B.C. shores since 2007. “There’s no indication if it’s a male or female as of yet,” coroner Jeff Dolan told The Province Wednesday. “At first glance it doesn’t match any of the other feet.” The first foot was found on Jedidiah Island in August 2007.

Six days after the first find, a man’s right foot was found on Gabriola Island.

A third foot was found in February 2008 on Valdez Island and was later matched to the fifth foot, which was discovered in June 2008 on Westham Island.

Two feet found in May 2008 on Kirkland Island and in November 2008 near Finn Slough in Richmond were identified as belonging to the same woman.

“These could be people who have come from outside the province when they entered the water in B.C.,” Dolan said.

“They could have come here from another province or state and no one knew.”

A DNA sample from the latest foot will be compared against missing person cases and other unidentified remains for possible matches.

Dolan said there is no evidence of foul play as all of the feet appear to have become disarticulated from the body through natural processes.

Disarticulated feet do occasionally wash ashore — although not in high records like B.C. has recently seen.

Lightweight running sneakers can be particularly buoyant, protecting the remains from critters while also helping the shoe to pop up and float along the water’s surface.

I've been running for over 25 years and that's always been a consideration when I buy a new pair of shoes.

Almost as mystifying as the single empty sneaker on the side of the road. Except these come with a bonus foot!

You’d think if someone was missing a foot they’d have reported it.

"Disarticulated feet do occasionally wash ashore — "

There are billions, perhaps trillions of possible word combinations in the English language. I imagine almost all of them have been used in one place or another at some previous point in history. I am positive that this particular phrase is unique, possibly to never be reprinted again.
