Outside of Los Zetas, it is the broad Mexican perception that the MexArmy is less corrupt than the cops.

It’s likely that the cops who opened fire on them were working for the drug barons —that’s my guess.

The Feds and local LE raided a brand new apartment complex about 3 miles from where I live. They arrested members of the Mexican drug gang La Familia. This happened in Pflugerville. Unbelievable.

Is this because the police are corrupt, or because they became confused and decided to defend themselves against all comers?

"This happened in Pflugerville. Unbelievable. "

Not really.
I've seen sillier names for cities all 'round the US.
But can't remember any off hand.

Back in the mid 90's a South Texas TV station did a story on auto theft in the region. They went to the Nuevo Laredo police headquarters and found the vast majority of the VIN numbers from the employee parking lot were stolen from the U.S.

Good link. I read the “No Country” book a while back but did not see the movie until this weekend.

I believe that things are indeed fundamentally different now in the borderlands, and that we are seeing the spread of narco-state on both sides of the border. If Mexico is not already a failed state, it is very close. I was down there in DF twice in the last month, visited the border area three times in the last year, and it feels very spooky. TX is certainly shaky, NM too. I do not feel safe in either state except in areas I know well.
