HUA HIN, Thailand — Asian leaders will pledge to overcome their differences and push towards the formation of an EU-style community as they wrap up an annual summit in Thailand on Sunday.
Human rights issues, border disputes and signs of apathy over a meeting that was twice delayed by protests have at times marred the gathering of leaders from a region that contains more than half the world's population.
But plans to increase the region's global clout by building closer ties eventually dominated the three-day meeting of Southeast Asian nations along with China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.
Heads of state at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin will sign a raft of agreements Sunday on boosting economic and political integration and cooperating on subjects including climate change and disaster management.

A EU-style bloc? An Asian Union? Are the globalists kidding us?
Don’t hold your breath.
So New Zealand is willing to fight alongside Communist(eh,Fascist) China but not the USA?
This is a commercial arrangement, not a military alliance.
That’s what they said about Europe in the 70s. 30 years later they’re pushing for an army.
Haven’t you noticed the camel’s nose tactics? “progressive”
Things change!
very rarely, and never where power is concerned.
I feel like someone is playing Risk on a grand scale.
Re: Australia and NZ, I can imagine their 900-lb neighbor to the north “explaining” how such an economic alliance would be in the best interests of their nations.
“Nice country ya got there. Would be a shame if anything were to happen to it.”
More to the point, in the EU it’s hard for one country to consistently dominate the others in the alliance.
In this Asian “community”, there’s no doubt who thinks they would be calling the shots. China will not join this alliance if there is any chance that others will be making decisions for them.
Philippine General Jesus Vagas, who was the General-Secretary of SEATO, had his house on a Soi next to my ASA units quarters in Bangkok.
He had interesting parties.
SEATO never developed into a real force in the area, and was dissolved in 1977.
They forget about the SCO....
Wouldn't want that powerful New Zealand military joining forces with the commies, now would we?
In that case Australia is set for victory. I always won with Risk by wetting Australia early on and then sneaking out as everyone else bogged down...
Excuse me - NZ was the only currently extant country which sent armed forces to Mordor in the face of overwhelming odds. Our troops have marched to the Black Gates.
Admittedly, some of the weaponry Peter Jackson issued us came as an upgrade, but still...
日本*ピング* (kono risuto ni hairitai ka detai wo shirasete kudasai : let me know if you want on or off this list)
I’m just messing around ;-)
...hahaha
...I seriously doubt that this will amount to anything, but it’s a good excuse for a conference.
Which ones?
