"But the machinery of order is breaking down, and optimism ought to be reserved for "the time after next.""

Excuse me, but the phrase is NOT "breaking down". That implies a natural process of dissolution.

The American order has been under attack for over a hundred years.

The first fifty, the attack was overt (by active communists), for the last fifty it has been covert (by communists calling themselves "liberals" and "progressives").

The desired end result has always been the establishment of global socialism.

In many ways, the 20th century was a terrible time for America - even as she became more powerful. About 90% of the “social progress” of the 1900s (unions, government regulation, wage and hour laws, environmental nonsense laws, the welfare state, etc.) needs to be un-done.
