The thing about soulless and amoral people is that they are easy, easy to manipulate if you’re even more soulless and amoral than they are.
The sky is falling. Yes, every day. But suddenly, if we don’t enact universal control of every last thing in the universe we’ll all die.
Most people I imagine have always imagined that liberty would die in a heroic last stand, with good men swinging their muskets like baseball bats in the ruins of the Alamo, or hieing away to the hills like Red Dawn to fight it out with the Cubans. Or something.
Who would have imagined that it would all end with a simple law that says you have to have permission to breathe, and you’ll have to pay a kickback to the stockbrokers for every breath you breathe, and you’ll have to have a permit for every breath you breathe, and it would be enacted democratically into law in accordance to all the usual democratic procedures.
When everyone realizes they’ve voted themselves into chains they’ll elect politicians who will promise to get them a better set of chains, and all political debate will circle around who will best administer the whole scheme. Dems will promise nicer chains and Repubs will promise to balance the budget. No one will even consider throwing out what will be by that time “settled law”.
