Smuggling tunnel found under border in Nogales

U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered a smuggling tunnel under the border in Nogales, Ariz., on Wednesday. It was the first passageway agents have found in the Tucson Sector in nearly four months.

The 30-foot tunnel, 150 yards east of the DeConcini Port of Entry, was fortified on the Mexican side with shoring, but on the American side it appeared unfinished, U.S. Border Patrol spokes-man Mario Escalante said.

The tunnel was not connected to the drainage system. Escalante said there was no evidence as to who was using the tunnel.

"They already had an opening on the north side at the time we found it," Escalante said. "It's hard to say who was using it, but the point of a tunnel system (is to use it)."

The tunnel seems to have originated on the Mexican side of the border, whereit starts off 3 feet wide by 3 feet high. On the American side, the tunnel is dirt-only and shrinks in size to 18 inches in circumference.

"On the Mexican side it's properly done, but from that point on it's kind of a hand-dug tunnel," Escalante said.

Escalante said an outside contractor would fill in the hole with concrete in a remediation process today at the latest.

Lucero Salazar Cruz, a spokeswoman with the Nogales, Sonora, police, said city police involvement in the discovery was limited to securing the entrance. She said the Mexican army has jurisdiction over the case.

The Mexican army officials in Sonora could not immediately confirm information related to the tunnel.

"If Mexicans were this industrious about fixing their country instead of breaking into ours Mexico wouldn’t be such a mess."

Uh....do you see ANYthing resembling irony in your statement...considering the FACT that our government is just AS corrupt NOW.. as the Mexican government has been.

And... also considering the possibility of near future massive US citizen immigration into Mexico due TO the very same corruption that has errupted here recently. In other words, that might have not quite cleared your synapses.... a majority of the Mexican people 'per se' are not any more responsible for the corruption of their government than WE are of OUR current corruption. A commie coup is a commie coup...and they usually start IN latin american countries. Let's stop judging and start correcting the problem.

Do such tunnels exist between the US and Canada?

No? Then we're talking Mexico here - literally an invasion by a neighboring nation, furtively sanctioned by our tax payer financed federal government.

Where then is Hillary when we are being invaded by a neighboring nation, at a CFR meeting?

The United States federal government is significantly more corrupt than the Cosa Nostra. At least the latter can honor a contract.

Uh no I don’t see the irony, sorry. Our government corrupt? Well I wouldn’t say its perfect but its a damn sight better than Mexicos situation. If you feel that way my advice to you is:Pick a better country and move there. I’ll take America anyday. And apparently so will Mexicans since their so desparate to get out of theirs. And btw, who did you vote for?
