Scozzafava's Cash Crunch, Hoffman's Tax Avoidance, Owens' Big Take
NY Daily News ^ | October 23, 2009 10:44 AM | Elizabeth Benjamin

Democratic NY-23 nominee Bill Owens is blowing away the NY-23 fundraising competition, raking in $502,197 from July 1 through Oct. 14 - more than the combined total of cash raised by his opponents, Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava and Doug Hoffman.

Owens has raised $502,197, spent $373,836 and has $125,561 worth of debt (that's just slightly less than the $128,361 he has on hand).

<snip>

As has been previously reported, Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava is indeed suffering from a serious cash crunch.

<snip>

Doug Hoffman outspent his fundraising - $229,879 to 205,139 - quite a burn rate. He's also $215,000 in debt ($102,000 of that is his own loan). His campaign has said he raised $210,000 on-line since the reporting period ended.

<snip>

A Democratic operative noted Hoffman appears to be avoiding paying payroll taxes and health insurance by hiring all his campaign staff as (very well-compensated) consultants rather than full-time workers.

Some interesting info here. I would be more comfortable if Hoffman wasn’t paying himself from the campaign funds. And the payroll taxes thing, while probably not illegal, looks kind of sleazy.

Still, his positions are much more in tune with his district. On the issues, he is much closer to John McHugh than either of the other candidates. The problem is funding and advertising in this particular race.

Has everyone seen this: “The Most Important Number in Politics Today.”

Doug Hoffman is the Conservative alternative in this race (or Hoffman by PayPal).

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat. Mark Steyn has coined the term DIABLO for her and others like her. Democrat In All But Label Only.

There are also at least 17 unprincipled DIABLO enablers in the house who have donated funds or otherwise supported to this LibeRal democRat's DIABLO’s campaign. They include Boehner, Cantor, Sessions, Hensarling, Brown-Waite and McCotter. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These unprincipled enablers should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year. Also, perhaps those of us who donated to the RNC or RCCC should ask for our money back so we can support the conservative candidates of our choice.

I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal).

Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

Something that only a Democrat would be mad about.

I can’t believe that the others are doing anything different. It would be a colossal waste of money to hire them as full time employees. A campaign is a temporary job.

Doing themselves, of course, but mad about a Republican doing the same.

If the Dems are attacking Hoffman it clearly means they fear him. I would look at this as a positive. Also, Hoffman’s a CPA, I think he knows tax issues quite well and doesn’t need advice from Tim Geithner’s friends.

Well, I’m sure that’s what a growing number of smart biz owners are doing in America and it’s a good thing. Independent contractors or consultants are responsible for their own taxes, their own healthcare, transportation,gas, clothing. There’s nothing sleazy about it, IMHO—especially since the indy contractor/consultant can work the tax code to their advantage.
It’s a win/win situation.

I think this is quite usual. It’s not illegal, and it was scummy of the Democrat Daily News to stick it in the headline like that as if he had done something corrupt.

A couple of my daughters cleaned house for a rich summer neighbor a few years back. He treated his staff badly, didn’t bother to learn any of their names, so they vowed never to work for him again. Anyway, at the end of the summer, his lawyer sent them the paperwork declaring that they had been paid as contractors. So they got to pay the taxes, Mr. Billionaire was off the hook for taxes, and I had to learn how to fill out a whole bunch of unfamiliar contractor forms for the IRS.

Well, that’s not how you treat temporary junior help, ordinarily, but it was perfecly legal, and no doubt it saved him a few bucks while costing my daughters a few bucks. If he had informed them beforehand, it would have been more decent.

Any fool would know that by paying someone as a consultant, means that the consultant would be paying their own payroll taxes on a estimated and quarterly basis. The would be issued a 1099 by the end of January of the following year in order to file their taxes by April.

If you have their pay stubs and they show that he withheld taxes from their paychecks, this is on him. It is illegal to withhold and not remit taxes on someone behalf. If this is the case and you have already filed, file an ammended return.

what the hell are you talking about? He can hire people any damn way he pleases? As a CPA he knows how to do so efficiently. I hire only consultants and 1099 them. To call this "tax avoidance" as the DN does, or "sleazy" by YOU is utterly absurd. The government doesn't have a right your your money. They are rules and Hoffman is following them. Why should he have hired people fulltime for wat is essentially a 2 month operation?

I wonder what party he belonged to? This is class liberal behavior. Like Marxist inhabitants of New Hampshire (low tax) who work in Marxist Massachusetts.

No, perfectly legal though not very nice. We didn’t get any paperwork until this temp job was over, and it showed them paid as contractors, nothing withheld.

Wow how come no such specific reporting on say, Charles Rangel, Chris Dodd, Maxine Waters, John Conyers, and of course Barney Frank?
