Sleepy U.S. district battleground for 'soul' of GOP

WASHINGTON — Tucked tight up against the Canada-U.S. border, along the southern banks of the St. Lawrence River, New York's 23rd congressional district is the kind of out-of-the-way rural constituency that rarely gets noticed by America's political elite.

But a nasty feud among warring factions of the Republican Party there has turned the national spotlight on a previously sleepy congressional race — with the outcome being cast as a test of whether political moderates are still welcome in the GOP.

"It's a contest over the soul of the Republican Party," said Calvin Exoo, a political scientist at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., an upstate town about 125 kilometres south of Ottawa.

Newt and the RCCC are trying to sell the soul of the GOP. The grass roots are saying, “This isn’t the way.”

The Most Important Number in Politics Today

Doug Hoffman is the Conservative alternative in this race (or Hoffman by PayPal).

Markos Moulitsas, founder of The Daily Kos has endorsed Scozzafava. Dede Scozzafava has also been endorsed by NYSUT, the largest labor union in New York, and an affiliate of the National Education Association.

Scozzafava also holds these positions:

Scozzafava has also run in past elections on the Working Families Party (a progressive party associated with ACORN) line on the ballot.

This lady isn’t a RINO, she is a big “R” libeRal democRat. Mark Steyn has coined the term DIABLO for her and others like her. Democrat In All But Label Only.

There are also at least 17 unprincipled DIABLO enablers in the house who have donated funds or otherwise supported to this LibeRal democRat's DIABLO’s campaign. They include Boehner, Cantor, Sessions, Hensarling, Brown-Waite and McCotter. I don’t have a full list, but I will be looking for it. These unprincipled enablers should be targeted for elimination in the primaries next year. Also, perhaps those of us who donated to the RNC or RCCC should ask for our money back so we can support the conservative candidates of our choice.

It’s an article from a Canadian paper - their newspapers drink more Kool-Aid than newspapers in the USA. Don’t expect much.

Lake Placid, the site of the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ hockey game , is in the 23rd district.

Almost 30 years later, another contest between collectivism and capitalism is being waged again.

Perhaps this is a good omen.

The last published poll is over a week old.

There have been rumors about internal polls showing things are moving up for Hoffman. I have heard he might even be leading, though it is a virtual tie. But that is all rumors, nothing anyone wants to put their names on.

Mr. Alberts,

The soul of the Republican Party is alive and well. It is the leadership of the pubbies that are in a coma. Where we are is where the soul of the Republican Party resides. It lives in the freedom loving minds of citizens across the nation just like America does. America at its core is not land, cities, politics, the military. No sir, America is an ideal. And its heart beats strong in free men everywhere.

with the outcome being cast as a test of whether political moderates are still welcome in the GOP.

Of course moderates are still welcome, it’s just that being just to the right of marx isn’t moderate and we don’t want moderates to run everything.

“with the outcome being cast as a test of whether political moderates are still welcome in the GOP.”

You can see how the outcome is already being shaped if Scozzafova doesn’t win. This will be the litany of the press if she doesn’t win. Moderates and independents not welcome. Only true believers need apply.

They can try that. But the polling data from last week showed that it was independents who supported Hoffman the most. I’m pretty sure that the exit polling will show the same thing. I hope that is one of the questions the pollsters actually ask.

I grew up in that district many years ago; republican and conservative roots ran deep, and it was common for candidates to have endorsements from both the republican and conservative parties. I would like to see a candidate running as a conservative win this election. It would give both the imputed republicans and the out-of-control democrats some reason to be concerned that we are going to take back this country, and maybe encourage them to just accept their pensions, say thank you for them, crawl in some comfortable hole, and stay out of the way as we clean up this horrible mess we have for a government.

They don’t need to refer to pesky things like facts to make their claim. You suppose the fact that independents breaking for Hoffman will prove them wrong but that fact will never see the light of day. All you have to do is review the ambush on Rush to see how facts are irrelevant.

But a nasty feud among warring factions of the Republican Party. There are no warring factions. You have the professional politicians interested in their own power, wealth and corruption and on the other side, you have the American People.

How many votes is Scozzafava going to end up with? Of that number, how many of those votes are strictly for the "R"? And how many of those Scozzafava votes are knowledgable votes, voting for her beliefs?

And if Scozzafava represents a 'faction' of the Republican Party, why has she given up on her positions? Why did she sign the tax pledge? Why has she changed other positions, if those positions represent Republicans?

The country clubbers have no numbers, they only have positions of responsibility and they have failed massively.

I love this line.....

“They are trying to figure out, did we lose because we are too ideologically pure? Or did we lose because we didn’t accommodate enough views?”

We already know the answer dumba**....but being a “journalist” from Canada, he has to put in the line that the tent for the GOP is not big enough to completely dilute the Conservative voice.

Big tent is a bad idea. As the Gipper stated so eloquently

“A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.”
