TORONTO — When Kian Tajbakhsh went before a judge in Tehran on Sunday he had several reasons to think he would be released. Instead, to his utter shock, he was given a 15-year prison term.

Since being detained in July, Mr. Tajbakhsh, an Iranian-American scholar, had been permitted two home visits, the last on Oct. 15, when he appeared hopeful that he would be released soon, a family member said. He said he had been transferred recently to a villa on the compound of the Evin prison, a sign of leniency that he thought suggested his release was imminent.

Mr. Tajbakhsh, an urban planner with a doctorate from Columbia University, was arrested in protests that rocked Iran after the election on June 12, in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed an overwhelming victory.

Gee, he went to an evil theocracy and got in a jam. Whoda thunk it?

No sympathy here. If you do stupid things, you may have to pay for it.

Send Jimmuh Carter over to negotiate his release.

That'll work.

(....maybe they'll latch on to him, also....and imprison him in the same Villa for Humanity).

Maybe if there was a straight talking, grammar mangling, no nonsense, cowboy in the White House, Iran would be a bit more reluctant to detain an Ivy League educated Iranian-American.

But when you have a weaselly, sophistry-ridden, appeasing, surfer kid in the White House, what does Iran have to fear?

Obama is deeply saddened.

Oh, wait, no he's not. He has made no statements in defense of liberty and democracy whatsoever. (I almost said "liberty and democracy in Iran but thought for a moment and decided he'd made none for there or here or anywhere else.)

What Obama has done is make entirely, 100%, monotonically consistent decisions and policies which serve to advance the cause of expansionary Islam. Try to find an exception-- there isn't one.

On matters of all sizes, and in his handling of international relations (especially his seemingly purposeful fracturing of the US-UK alliance, and of course his abuse of Israel), he has weakened the cause of America and favored the cause of the Ummah. Every time. Without exception. The pattern is clear to anyone caring to look for it.

And on his list of stupid things. The evil theocracy lets you visit home TWICE, and you decide to not make an escape? I’d excuse myself to go to the toilet, and they’d never see me again!

Didn’t he ever see “the Fugitive, “Cool Hand Luke”?
Didn’t he ever hear that song 50 ways to leave your lover? Slip out the back Jack,,,,make a new plan Stan,,,,

“...he had several reasons to think he would be released.”

This is the problem right here. Leftists fail to grasp the reality of evil. I’ll bet this guy thought if only he had the chance to negotiate, he could have walked out of the Al-Quaeda basement with Nicholas Berg hand-in-hand. But we know there just would have been two sawed-off heads on youtube.

Yea, it may have been stupid, but at least he took the front line to oppose the regime in Iran. You must recall the pictures of Imadinnerjacket on the plane with the American hostages in 1979? He is now welcomed to the UN. At least this man layed it on the line to protest the corruption in Iran.

I will agree with you; I believe it was incredibly brave of him to stand up to tyranny. But he is still stupid; not for standing up to tyranny, but for not realizing exactly what that meant. He should not be surprised that they smacked him down hard. He should consider himself lucky to be alive.

In fact, he was one of the protesters who were waiting for support from the White House to oppose Ah-mahdi-nejad and remove him from office. The White House never gave the support, and the protesters were arrested. Like the Khmer Rouge, the educated were a prize for arrest. The Khmer rouge killed anyone who was educated, which included anyone who had marks showing they wore glasses. This Iranian will not be able to protest for another 15 years. The Iranians will continue to build their atomic bomb program. And some say the brave protesters got what was coming. I can only hope Ah-mahdi-nejad doesn’t read FR.

>>”He was sentenced on charges of working as a consultant for the Open Society Institute, a democracy-building group, which the indictment identified as a C.I.A. satellite institution.”

“Open Society Institute” is George Soros’ baby.
