Police are negotiating with a gunman reported to be holding as many as nine hostages in the Workers' Compensation Board building in downtown Edmonton.
Edmonton police spokesman Jeff Wuite said authorities received a report Wednesday of a man armed with a hunting rifle inside the building, which is close to the legislature for the western Canadian province.
"Now that we have communication with the suspect, we feel good that we can move forward to resolving it," Wuite said. "We want to find out what this guy wants and what we can do to end this peacefully."

All but two hostages released in Edmonton standoff
An unknown number of people have been freed after a gunman entered the Workers’ Compensation Board building in downtown Edmonton, but two people remain hostage, according to a police source.
A 911 call was placed shortly before 9 a.m., reporting that a man with a gun was inside the building, which is located near the Alberta legislature.
The police tactical unit and officers from the local division descended on the area and began to evacuate hundreds of people from the building, Edmonton police spokesperson Jeff Wuite told CTV News Channel Wednesday morning.

Six women and two men are being held hostage at Edmontons downtown WCB offices by a disgruntled client.
A neighbour of the rifle-toting gunman says the man has been fuming with anger over the WCB for about a week and a half.
“He's been so stressed out,” said Don Bellerose, who lives in the same apartment building. The neighbour described him as a good guy, but quick to lose his temper.
The man holding Workers Compensation Board employees under siege walked past a security guard to get inside the downtown building.
It's not clear how the man made it past security and a swipe-card system.
“I have no details about what happened,” said WCB spokeswoman Dayna Therien, who confirmed the man was a client.
