A new poll out this morning shows Bob McDonnell extending his lead in the Virginia gubernatorial race two weeks before Election Day. McDonnell now leads his Democratic opponent, Creigh Deeds 49-41. Ten percent of voters remain undecided in the contest.

The poll of 605 registered voters was conducted by Clarus research over the weekend. In Clarus' last poll, taken in Sept., McDonnell led by 5 points with 20% undecided.

Internals from the poll show McDonnell gaining among women, independents and voters outside the populous D.C. suburbs. Despite weeks of Democratic attacks over his 1989 master's thesis -- attacks which focused on his negative views of women in the workplace at the time -- McDonnell now leads among women by one point.

Inside the poll (from the Clarus release):

* Despite heavy Democratic attacks on McDonnell's views on the role of women in society, McDonnell now edges Deeds among women by one point, 45-44 percent. McDonnell posts a sizable 14-point lead among men

* McDonnell leads Deeds in every major demographic group in the Commonwealth except Northern Virginians, voters under 30 and African Americans.

* Deeds holds a massive 72-point lead among African Americans, winning this vote 79-7 percent. He beats McDonnell 50-43 percent in Northern Virginia and 48-41 percent among voters 18-29.

* McDonnell leads white voters by a solid 26 points, 58-32 percent. He also carries the Southeastern/Central part of the state 45-42 percent and the Southwest/Western region by a thumping 28 points, 57-29 percent.

* Among voters 65 and older, McDonnell beats Deeds by a wide 54-37 percent margin.

* Regionally, Deeds has improved his position in Northern Virginia since the mid-September poll, going from 45 percent to 50 percent while McDonnell has moved from 40 percent to 43 percent in the region. Deeds has improved his support in the Southeastern/Central part of the state, going from 36 percent to 42 percent while McDonnell has increased his strength from 41 percent to 46 percent.

* McDonnell leads Republicans 89-4 percent. Deeds wins Democrats 86-6 percent.

* Fifty-one percent of voters who remain undecided in the gubernatorial race said they don't know enough about the candidates to make a decision and 24 percent said they have doubts about both candidates

48-41 percent among voters 18-29.

The stupid segment. Somebody ought to bring up what happens when this Health Care fiasco passes, with its mandates and taxes on insurance and increased premiums. At the very least , they will stay home.

the DNC dirty tricks team is working hard to find an October surprise ... would bet they will hint, then outright make up a scandal within 3 days of the election, if they have to.

Mr Deeds is a test case for obama’s grasp on power among blue state moderates, and Tim Kaine’s legacy

I'm knocking on wood. I can't believe that McDonnell is leading by eight, especially considering the full-out frontal assault by WaPo. That endorsement of Deeds this weekend was LONG - ridiculous, but long.

It appears that Virginians aren't buying what WaPo is selling, hard. I actually think that Sheila Johnson's endorsement helped McDonnell, and Wilder's non-endorsement of Deeds has hurt him.

I'm hoping that McDonnell doesn't take his foot off the gas. A ten-point win would really send a message to the Blue Dogs thinking about voting for this health care mess.

Two very interesting items because another poll shows the turn out among this group will drop off from 21% of total voters to just 8%. The contrast with the senior vote makes for a possible 60/40 beating for Deeds.

If I was advising Deeds, I owuld tell him to hold a press conference with past or present black Redskins players, and claim to support the banning of Rush Limbaugh to NFL ownership. Then call Rush a racist, and force McDonnell to make a stand on the Rush Limbaugh issue.

Two weeks for the dems to pull out all the stops and get uglier than you’ve even seen them before.

McDonnell’s team needs to be in full court press and go on the offensive hard, catch them off guard. Deeds needs to spend the next two weeks having to be on defense rather than be able to smear the last two weeks without having to deal with anything himself.

And where did we expect the black vote to go. Sad and they will get what they ask for.

Well, 14 percent of blacks are undecided. That means they can’t bring themselves to SAY they are voting for McDonnell, but they also have no interest in voting for the Democrat like they always do.

Especially when that democrat attacked a successful black woman for making fun of his inability to speak. I can imagine some liberal blacks sitting around the living room, shaking their heads, and saying “The white folk have been making fun of our speech for decades, and this white cracker has the nerve to attack one of US for noticing he stammers every time he’s asked a hard question?”

You do know of course, that Bob is married to a former Redskins cheerleader? And that the son of a former Redskins coach is a former Governor and Senator and a strong backer of McDonnell?

And that the Redskins franchise has given McDonnell $50,000 making them one of his highest donors?

:-p
