Detroit, MI) -- Three men died Sunday while running the Detroit Marathon. Race officials say the three likely died of cardiac arrest during the race.

Two collapsed at the finish line while the third went down at the 12-mile mark while at a fluid station. While deaths during marathons are rare, four have now passed away in recent weeks.

Before the three in Detroit, a 23-year-old man died while running a marathon in Baltimore on October 10. Studies show about one in every 100-thousand runners die during marathons, with roughly half of those deaths happening in the last mile.

If nuclear power caused that many deaths it would be banned forever.

Following the bold tradition of Pheidippides. A bunch of my runner buddies used to wear t-shirts that said, “You haven’t run a marathon unless you fall dead at the finish line.” Pheidippides.

Didn’t the original marathoner die, shortly after delivering his message?

Obviously a high risk activity. There should be heavy taxes on it to help pay for medical costs.

Why not?

They did it to the smokers.

Probably as a result of being mugged.

Probably as a result of being mugged.

My first thought was lead poisoning.

Not too many medical costs if your dead.

Planar faceitis, joint pains, muscle strains...
Second-hand side effects are costly.

Back in the 80s I ran 8 marathons over a 4 year period

I was injury free those 4 years

All my running injuries have occurred before and after that 4 year span

Makes no sense

At age 73 I still run 6 miles 3 days a week ( or what passes for running these days )

Three deaths during the Detroit Marathon really does not surprise me.

That they were all due to natural causes — *that* is surprising.
