Syracuse, NY -- An explosion in the basement of a private Islamic school has been ruled accidental, said Syracuse fire investigator Ken Heffernan.
The Ihsan School of Excellence, on West Onondaga Street near the intersection with West Street, was evacuated Oct. 8 after the explosion sent a dust cloud and natural gas into the building, investigators said.
The 75 children were safely removed from the school building, which has remained closed since.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were contacted by investigators looking into the explosion because the West Onondaga Street school is considered a place of worship.
But now investigators believe a piece of faulty equipment triggered the explosion. Forensic tests are being performed on items from the basement. Investigators are trying to interview the building's maintenance worker, Heffernan said.
The students resumed school Wednesday at a mosque near Onondaga Community College, said Ashraf Attia, a business professor at the State University of Oswego who serves on Ihsan's board of directors.

Uh huh.
ditto
“Explosion in Islamic school basement ruled accidental”
The vest went off prematurely?
Too many mosques in Syracuse....
NY ping
I am NOT going to say “a faulty detonator”— buildings have been know to go “boom” for other reasons, including natural gas.
More than a week after and all we have was that it was “faulty equipment”. And they still haven’t talked to a maintenance worker, so he can scrub all the chemical explosive out of his hair and hands and clean out his home chemical cache before hand?
How stupid can they get? Was this a bomb making factory or not?

Attia said the school is working with its insurance company to repair the building in Syracuse. The explosion caused asbestos to get into the air, Heffernan said.
“We don’t have a clear picture yet,” Attia said. “We’re working to bring it back to where it was.”
It was intended to go off in the synagogue down the street.
You are quite correct, O fellow Washingtonian. However, considering the location and the occupants...one could certainly jump to a pre-determined conclusion based on past behaviors/incidents/proclivities.
Science project?
“Science project?”
Improvised munitions class.
Work-related accident.
Bomb 101 needs a new class room.
There’s hardly a school anywhere that that hasn’t happened to. What’s the big deal?
I wonder why people hear “explosion” and “death cult” and immediately think “terrorism.”
They could have been doing a science project: “Make Bomb Vest - Watch Jews and Christians Fly in the Air” and there was an accident.
Fertilizing the tomatoes with his diesel fueled automatic garden equipment?
