'Person of Interest' Sought in Deadly Station Fire

LOS ANGELES -- L.A. County Sheriff's detectives investigating the massive "Station Fire" want to talk with a transient they say started a smaller fire in the same general area days earlier.

Officials are looking for Babatunsin Olukunle, 25, a Nigerian man who dropped out of the Unviersity of California, Davis in 2007, according to L.A. County Sheriff's Lt. Liam Gallagher.

Gallagher says Olukunle is wanted for questioning in the Lady Bug fire, which broke out on August 20, six miles away from the Station Fire ignition point along Highway 2 near a ranger station north of La Canada Flintridge.

"During our investigation of the Station Fire, we received tips from the public that there was a male black transient that was seen for several months prior to the fire going up and down Angeles Crest Highway," Gallagher said in a news conference Monday.

Also, Rain after the Station Fire spells disaster for Foothill residents

"Some of the areas burned by the Station Fire show the highest likelihood for big debris flows I've ever seen," said USGS research geologist Susan Cannon. It's not just the temporary absence of plant life. The USGS found that the 160,000-acre fire, the largest in modern times in Los Angeles County, changed the chemistry of the soil in the mountains, creating what they call a waxy, impermeable material just below ground level. That means that when the first rains hit, the water will have less chance than usual of soaking into the earth. Instead, it will head downhill toward populated areas more quickly, bringing with it soil and rocks moving swiftly and leaving mayhem in their wake.

Student visa overstay. Title V of the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act (2002) requires colleges and universities to monitor their students who are in the country on a student visa and report to ICE if they fail to enroll or drop out. I wonder if the homeowners could sue the University of California at Davis. And for a real treat, click the link and look at his picture.

Yeah, he looks like Buckwheat on PCP.

We know we’re in trouble when “colleges and universities” are counted on as partners in immigration law enforcement and, heaven forbid, national security.

I would imagine they’re keeping their investigation pretty close to the vest. Looks like they couldn’t locate this guy and decided the public might be able to help. LA Co Sheriffs have always had an excellent arson investigation dept.

They aren’t “counted on as partners.” The are required to report by federal statute, like bank are required to report currency transactions over $10,000. An enterprising reporter might want to look and see what happened, and do a story on whether this law is being enforced.

Lotsa leg work to do, apparently. There were also a number of marijuana grows in the forest, and during the fire the sheriffs and the rangers kept running across ‘agricultural workers’ who'd been employed on the grows. Probably had to finish interviewing them before they started looking at similar incidents.

Sorry you didn’t care for my language, but thanks for the lecture. I understood they were being required by law. I just happened to phrase it in a way that you choose to argue with. Whatever.
