The Whitehouse reports Obama did it to promote awareness of the effect of global warming. Critics complain the stunt could backfire. Fred Borsninski of the International Ocean and Water Institute say the prolonged exposure of seawater to Obama's body may have increased the temperature of the sea by several degrees.
