An Opportunity Missed: 'Ten Riskiest Foods' List Highly Deceptive, Worse Than Useless to Cosnumers
Jim Prevor's Perishable Pundit ^ | October 8, 2009 | Jim Prevor

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a self-proclaimed consumer advocacy group, came out with a list of the “The Ten Riskiest Foods Regulated By the U.S. Food And Drug Administration,” and frankly, Caroline Smith DeWaal, who is the Director of Food Safety for the group and who serves on the Board of Advisors of the Center for Produce Safety and thus knows better, should be ashamed of herself.

Rather than delve into reasonable issues of comparitive risk and risk assesment the Center for Science in the Public Interest elected to scare cosnumers off healthy foods, throw farmers under the bus and contribute to a "junk science" culture that hurts consumers, producers and our country.

Whenever I hear “Center for Science in the Public Interest”, like when I hear “PETA”, I pretty much ignore what they have to say. They are primarily fanatics who can’t just be satisfied with their own paranoid peccadilloes and phobias, they want everyone else to be frightened as well. Funk them.

I’ve found that you can pretty much take what the CSPI says and do the opposite and come out pretty good overall...

Eggs, tuna, potatoes, tomatoes, cheese, ice cream. These are all staples in my diet. Woe is me.

Great article, and a clear deconstruction of some simply classic junk science. If only more science in the news was given the same treatment.

As a statistician friend of mine said... “There’s three kinds of lies in the world: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.”

Ate them all this week. We're both Dead Men Walking. I hope I don't hit my head when I fall down.

Leafy greens: 363 outbreaks involving 13,568 reported cases of illness.
Tomatoes: 31 outbreaks with 3,292 reported cases of illness.
Sprouts: 31 outbreaks with 2,022 reported cases of illness.

I can remember when the Food Police used to call these healthy foods.
That was way back before NAFTA, of course.

Could it be that The Center for Science in the Public Interest is becoming more conservative???

Nah.... maybe they just screwed up and let some of the real data get out.

I notice they left out any mention of Dihydrogen Monoxide. Dihydrogen Monoxide (also known as Hydrogen Hydroxide or Oxygen Dihydride) is a component of every one of the foods listed.

The government should pass a law that no food can be sold which contains even a trace of DHMO.
