It was standing room only at a Staten Island town-hall meeting on health care last night, when close to 1,000 participants launched a raucous, ranting assault on President Obama's reform plan.
Hundreds more were turned away from an auditorium that couldn't accommodate the crush that showed up for the meeting, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon.
McMahon, a moderate who represents the city's most conservative district, fielded a barrage of questions on everything from tort reform to the so-called health-care public option.
"We don't have any money to spend on anything, not health care," said Barbara Paolucci, 63, of Dongan Hills, to roars of approval.
"You're spending money we don't have. China owns us. Dubai owns us."
Although Obama has insisted his plan will cut costs in the long run, Staten Island critics were unconvinced.
One of the biggest bursts of applause came when a participant thundered, "Anyone who believes their taxes aren't going to be raised believes in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny."
The line to speak stretched to the door in the 918-capacity auditorium at the Michael J. Petrides school. Speakers were given two minutes; many went over.

Good news from Staten Italy. Of course, Molinaro and the "conservative" Party will still endorse the Obamabot McMahon when he runs in 2010.
Staten Italy politics are notoriously incestuous and unprincipled. Good to see, however, that many islanders are sensible.

I was there. The room holds 998 people. That is how many were in it at all times. A police officer at the door was only letting one in when one went out.People continued to arrive until after 9PM for a 7 to 9 event. ALL of the passion was on our side. The ratio of against/for 90/10 as was self evident in the number of union thugs huddled in the corner up front on the right. The SEIU brought preprinted signs. Signs where a violation of the rules but the union people are not much more than tall children so of course they HAVE to be excused. When anyone of these fools spoke it was all emotion and no facts.
In the biggest city in the union, dripping with union thugs they couldn't get out more than about 100 knuckle draggers and a few lefties from the local Teachers' union office on Amboy Road who were most likely on the union's clock. They have NOTHING going for them, nothing except Nancy Pelosi.

Of course we all know that the people are not really troubled about the increased costs and loss of control and quality in health care - they are just a bunch of racists being paid to protest by some right-wing cable TV hosts.

At one point, a speaker demanded to know if McMahon supported the public option.
“Yes or no,” the crowd chanted, but he refused to be pinned down. “
Ouch!! Oh.. my, my, my .... riding the fence and not going to jump one way or another till the winners are obvious. Ha!!! Caught between lies and their pathological attachment to their offices!!!

that is one large factor in our favor....most of the hard-core union guys I know are too lazy to put down the beer and get off the couch, let alone drag themselves out to a town-hall meeting to defend The Bamster...

Several years ago there was a vote for Staten Island secession. 51st State?

Excellent work, Gloria Jane! I'm in total agreement with you. I wonder if the surprised look on Pelousy’s face has anything to do with the middle finger of Harry Reid's left hand?

No. Staten Island voted in a non-binding resolution in 1992 to become its own city.
