Sharp Rise In Chinese Arrests At U.S. Border

At least 261 have been arrested this year trying to cross near Tucson. Illegal Chinese immigrants can be big money for smugglers.

By Sebastian Rotella October 5, 2009

Reporting from Nogales, Ariz. - Amid an overall drop in arrests of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S-Mexico border, an intriguing anomaly has cast a new light on human smuggling: Authorities report an almost ten-fold spike in the number of Chinese people caught in the southern Arizona desert, the busiest smuggling corridor on the international line.

The Border Patrol in the Tucson sector has arrested at least 261 Chinese border-crossers this year, compared to an annual average of 32 during the past four years, officials said.

"They are the main [non-Mexicans] we catch," said field operations supervisor Juventino Pacheco of the patrol's international liaison unit in Nogales. "Lately we have been catching more Chinese than Central Americans."

When agents find groups of exhausted Chinese migrants hiding in gulches and huddled in smugglers' vehicles, they often request help from Dean Delap, the sector's only Mandarin-speaking agent. The two-year Border Patrol veteran did not expect that his experience in China, where he spent time teaching and studying, would prove valuable in Nogales.

Things must really be getting worse in China or this maybe a sabotage attempt.

12 Iranian nationals in Nashville face drug-smuggling charges

Snippets: A dozen Iranian nationals living in Nashville have been charged in an international conspiracy to smuggle large amounts of opium into Middle Tennessee.

The indictments, unsealed Friday, charge 11 of the defendants with conspiring to distribute opium: Reza Koushkbaghi, Farhad Shahbazi Martin, Vazgen Fakhoorian, Pejman Karshenas Najafabadi, Pedram Mohammadabadi, Farzaneh Sadkhosravi, Hassan Shams, Abdolreza Efrani, Mehran Gonyaei and Hossein Mohammadabadi, and an unnamed person who had not been arrested Friday afternoon.

A 12th defendant, Peyman Aboudzadeh Behmahani, was charged with distributing the drug.

Authorities allege Koushkbaghi was the ringleader of the opium conspiracy. U.S. Magistrate Judge Juliet Griffin ruled last week that he would stay locked up until his trial. Bail has been set, or will be, for the other defendants; some remained in custody Friday.

All 12 are in the U.S. legally, prosecutors said.

They were probably just trying to get to the Empire State Building for the Communist lighting memorial.

Hypothetical here: What if the Chinese nationals were somehow “misplaced” after their arrest in the field and they never made it into the station to be booked? What if they somehow ended up buried in a hole in the desert? Not recommending this, but it gives rise to the question of whether the Chinese government or any other group or agency would ever ask about the missing people. If they don’t ask, the missing Chinese nationals would stay missing in perpetuity. If they do ask, it means they were aware of the illegal entry attempts into our country and likely sponsored the attempt.

Again, I’m not suggesting someone should actually “disappear” any people, but realistically what could be done if it did happen?

Most likely the reason is that Chinese snakehead gangbangers saw on TV how open a border we have down South after the crazy reports about Mexican drug cartels a few months back and decided to profit from America’s weakness. God, $30k-$70k a pop plus interest when they become slave labor in the US is massive profit. I think their usual route is through Canada, which means that they would have to bypass a relatively more secure country versus Mexico where bribes have more meaning.

You know what, these folks would be here to release chemical or biological agents that could cause epidemics. Consider some of the new influenza we’re seeing right now.

I don’t think this is what has taken place, but you can’t entirely dismiss it.

It is absolutely criminal what is taking place right now on our borders. Presidents are refusing to stop the states from being invaded.

This is a clear violation of their oath of office.

This really angers me. We are vulnerable!

PRC is planting charges, doing recon, setting up safe houses.

We have more 5th columns than we have citizens.

Subterfuge? You really think the government wants dumb country hicks to do spy work? The Chinese gov has more than enough US treasury bills to pay for their intel from smart professionals.
