Gore Vidal: ‘We’ll have a dictatorship soon in the US’
The Woodward Report ^ | September 30, 2009

Posted on 09/30/2009 9:18:37 AM PDT by honestabe010

The grand old man of letters Gore Vidal claims America is ‘rotting away’ — and don’t expect Barack Obama to save it

Another notable Obama mis-step has been on healthcare reform. “He f***ed it up. I don’t know how because the country wanted it. We’ll never see it happen.” As for his wider vision: “Maybe he doesn’t have one, not to imply he is a fraud. He loves quoting Lincoln and there’s a great Lincoln quote from a letter he wrote to one of his generals in the South after the Civil War. ‘I am President of the United States. I have full overall power and never forget it, because I will exercise it’. That’s what Obama needs — a bit of Lincoln’s chill.” Has he met Obama? “No,” he says quietly, “I’ve had my time with presidents.” Vidal raises his fingers to signify a gun and mutters: “Bang bang.” He is referring to the possibility of Obama being assassinated. “Just a mysterious lone gunman lurking in the shadows of the capital,” he says in a wry, dreamy way.

Instead, America has “no intellectual class” and is “rotting away at a funereal pace. We’ll have a military dictatorship fairly soon, on the basis that nobody else can hold everything together. Obama would have been better off focusing on educating the American people. His problem is being over-educated. He doesn’t realise how dim-witted and ignorant his audience is. Benjamin Franklin said that the system would fail because of the corruption of the people and that happened under Bush.”

"He doesn’t realize how dim-witted and ignorant his audience is."

If they were not ignorant, he would not be president.

Gore Vidal is a tired lefty, but we are on the wrong track with Obama.

From reading that Lincoln quote, I guess the guy was somewhat of a totalitarian dictator. No use of persuasion or logic, just “I got the power - don’t make me execute you.” The lefties of the world all croon over Lincoln.

The Republicans have practically no political power right now and this poor guy thinks they will rise to totalitarian might. So sad. This guy must be very ill.

“Just a mysterious lone gunman lurking in the shadows of the capital,” he says in a wry, dreamy way."

If this were said by anyone other than someone known to be another self-absorbed liberal like Obama it would be taken as a threat or a wish that should be interpreted as encouraging violence against President Obortion.

I think the left has been using him for venomous quotes for 60 years. His best years as an essayist are ALMOST 60 years behind him.

It’s incredible what/who passes for ‘intellectual’ these days. This guy is a clown, a mush-head, and a fool. He makes no sense on most subjects he discusses, but because he speaks with confidence, media mush-heads call him an intellectual. What a joke.

People like this make me sick. I despise them almost as much as fake conservatives.

"...I don’t know how because the country wanted it..."

Another libtard who flits around the Manhattan liberal cocktail circuit, and can't understand how this didn't become law because everyone HE knew wanted it...

What a tool.

APF(American Police Force) Show Up IN HARDIN, Montana-Comandeer Jurisdiction

BILLINGS - American Police Force officials showed up in Mercedes SUV’s that had “Hardin Police” stenciled on the vehicles. The twist, the city of Hardin doesn’t have a police department. Two Rivers Authority officials say having APF patrol the streets was never part of their agenda. “I have no idea. I really don’t because that’s not been a part of any of the discussions we’ve had with any of them,” said Two Rivers Authority’s Al Peterson.

As it stands now the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department is contracted to patrol the city and APF has no jurisdiction. If that was changed Peterson says it would have to go through the city council. As for the jail contract with APF, both sides are yet to agree to a deal as bondholders rejected it again on Thursday morning. “It’s a complicated issue there are a lot of tax laws to work through we were hoping to get it by Tuesday night now we’re hoping to get it by Friday night,” said Peterson.

Officials say the contract only deals with the detention facility and a police training center. There’s no mention of a homeless shelter, animal shelter, or any services for the area. “That was never in the contract to begin with. I think it was on a wish list of what Captain Michael wanted to do here,” said Peterson. American Police Force officials plan to stay in the area for the next month.

...Lincoln quote from a letter he wrote to one of his generals in the South after the Civil War. ‘I am President of the United States. I have full overall power and never forget it, because I will exercise it’.

He needs some context here. At the time, the Union generals were not only not following Lincoln’s commands, there were totaly ignoring Lincoln. There were literally running the war without Lincoln, and seemed to have no intention of listening to him at all (he was, in their opinion, totally unfit to be president, much less in charge of the military.)

Lincoln was making sure they understood that he was the commander in chief. He later had to exercise that power by removing several generals before he could get the military leadership to recognize his constitutional power as commander in chief of the military.

Obama’s problem isn’t with the military. It is with the citizens of the country and the members of the senate and house. Obama isn’t supposed to have total control in this instance. That’s why they call it a system of checks and balances.
