Well two factors. (1) It is an act of war. Now if you have as strong enough military that not a problem. If Obama continues to gut ours and China continues to build up theirs it becomes a problem. See the Suez crisis when Egypt nationalized itself and was promptly invaded by England, France and Israel.

(2) You will never be able to borrow again for some time, and your currency will be considered worthless. This is what happened to Zimbabwe after they started seizing private property. Since there is no nation big enough to be our sugar daddy, like the USSR was to Castro, I suspect the second we nationalized we would need to be prepared for balanced government budgets or run away inflation. Since I can't see the government ever having enough self discipline for the former, we are going to have to get used to billion dollar loafs of bread.
