I'm finishing up my year long tour in Afghanistan. From my experience, there are two Afghanistans. The cities, like Kabul, Herat and Farah, can be saved. The people that live in the cities actually care about the future and want progress.

In sharp contrast are the Afghans that live in villages outside the cities. They are living in Biblical times. They have no concept of modernity or the world beyond their villages. They could care less about progress, America, or anything else. I don't think these places are necessarily pro-Taliban or Anti-America, I think they just don't give a crap. These people are living a subsistence existence. If it doesn't have anything to do with a roof over their heads or food in their bellies, they just don't give a crap. I mean that literally. That's their life aspiration: shelter and food.

These are the people that can't be saved, imo. These are the places where the Taliban live. I say we need to stop with the Mr. Nice Guy approach to these places. If we don't level them to the ground, we need to at least make it extremely uncomfortable for them.
