Susan Atkins, who committed one of modern history's most notorious crimes when she joined Charles Manson and his gang for a string of killings in 1969 that terrorized Los Angeles and put her in prison for the rest of her life, has died. She was 61.

“[S]he grew up in San Jose, the middle child of three. When she was 15, her mother died of cancer. Her father sold the family home and all their furnishings to pay the hospital bills. Atkins began failing school and her father became an alcoholic who frequently left Susan and her younger brother, Steven, to fend for themselves.”

Early intervention may have helped.

What she did was horrible and there’s simply no excuse, but let’s face it, losing her mother, her house and all her belongings certainly had a traumatic effect on her as a human being.

"She was the scariest of the Manson girls," said Stephen Kay, a former Los Angeles County deputy district attorney who helped prosecute the case and argued against Atkins' release at her parole hearings. "She was very violent."

She must have been a monster to do that to Sharon Tate and her baby.

Yep. I am not sure how one ‘recovers’ from being a mass murderer. I will leave it all in God’s hands.....

Here is what I have been thinking: It has been said that Susan Atkins accepted Christ as her Savior. I do not claim to know the condition of her heart, but if there was true repentence, she is with the Lord. I also don’t know if Sharon Tate was saved or the condition of her heart before the Lord. What if she wasn’t saved? Any thoughts?
