The Founding Fathers expected our elected leaders to defend America from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. If America gets hit, I expect our elected leaders to hit back quickly and with overwhelming force. I don't support nation building, spreading democracy to the Islamic world or using the US military as a full time international police force.
911 was an act of war and the USA responded, justifiably.

I was thinking had the US kept that form of defense, can you imagine the network of hit men we would have across the world and their level of expertise in hunting and killing? Knowing us, we would have created a quite web of fear and death not really in our control. Our global intellegence would be wild. During the cold war...we would have had the Soviets putting hits on US leaders with their own web of death squads.
At the same time, when we were gearing up for war, I thought to myself, “why can’t we just send in some Marines to hunt Bin Laden down and kill his you know what” instead of killing and breaking everything in a war. War is for enemy States. In this age of terrorism, we maybe should think of the Islamic terrorists more like pirates who need to be hunted down and killed directly by military squads no matter where they are on earth.

One problem with just going in and killing bin Laden, besides the missed opportunities during the 90’s is who would we send in?
Rewards on his head have been futile as those around him aren't interested in money, they are religious zealots in the worst way who feel their God as granted them rule of the earth.
Secondly, killing bin Laden, while a huge morale booster, would not stop terror. He would just be replaced.
While many disagree with me, I think Bush did a good thing by drawing he fight into Iraq from Afghanistan as the terrain is much less hostile than Afghanistan. But, heavy opposition that began with the Kerry candidacy and continues today made defending America very difficult.
A problem with squads hunting down terrorists is those who demand terrorists receive “due process.” As much as they cry about Bush being a war criminal and a murderer now, how much more so would that cry be if he had done such a thing?
9/11 was an act of war, whether we admit it or not. It's a totally new type of warfare on us and one the terrorists have been using against us for 3 decades now.
I think had Carter acted with much more strength in 1979, when the Iranians seized our embassy and held people for over 400 days, terrorism might not be as prevalent as it is today. Not everyone agrees.
Like it or not this is a war, not a criminal matter. We will be learning as we go and have been since were not fighting a country as we always did before, but fighting within countries.
One other area Paul is totally wrong, in my opinion, is they only attack us because of what we do over there or that we are over there. What he leaves unexplained is all the terrorist attacks against those countries, and within them, that have long opposed our foreign policy.
I don't like war either, having been in one, but we didn't really choose this one. Radical Jihadists have attacked American interests over 15 times, twice on our soil, since 1979.
Each successive attack took more lives and was deadlier. Isn't it time we stood up and fought back?
If not, when will it be time to fight those who keep attacking us?

We do not like seeing people die in battle, I lost 13 buddies in Viet Nam. I greive for each and every one of them, yet still have appreciation and yes, pride that they stood up and volunatrily placed themselves between us and our enemies.
Incidentally, my comment on when is the right time to fight wasn’t necessarily meant directly for you, but a general statement.
To pull the Troops out now, leaving the job unfisnished, would be a repeat of what they did for Viet Nam, invalidate our sacrifices.
And, as I said earlier in another comment, if we abandon Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al Qaeda will undoubtedly return to power with the very real possibility of Pakistan following shortly after.
If that were to happen, terrorists would then have access to nukes.
To me, it is time to take the gloves off and fight this war like we did WW2.

See, that is what I am afraid of with Afghanistan and the Marxists repeating what they did during the Viet Nam war. Obama is already pulling the “rules of engagment” crap that will get them killed like we saw in Viet Nam. He’s not following the needs expressed by generals thinking he knows better from the oval office while he plays politics with the war. I don’t want 50,000 killed and then we pull out.
If we are going to have this mob undermining us in war and in every other way, then I want out now before any more are killed. I agree that it would be a shame to cut and run but I just am seeing a repeat of what happened in Viet Nam.

Under the current circumstances, ALL OF US should be against keeping troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Obambi expressed it himself: We are NOT going for the win. Well, if we are NOT GOING FOR THE WIN, WHY THE HELL ARE WE STILL THERE? And why is Obambi considering a troop surge when HE said we’re not going for the win??? And WHY are YOU supporting this madness when the de facto Pres__ent of the United States and CinC clearly said he’s not planning to win? Get real and bring our troops HOME NOW. Obambi’s game is not worth ONE MORE DROP OF BLOOD FROM ONE OF OUR TROOPS.
I seriously doubt that Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Adams or any of the Founders would have agreed with Ron Paul that America was to blame for 911 and not the terrorists. Your adulation for Paul is sicko.

The problem there is we will just have to go back over later, maybe when my grandsons are of age and when they are much stronger.
That’s why I opposed Obama and Paul and wasn’t too keen on McCain, until Sarah Palin joined the ticket.
Viet Nam is a good lesson to look back on as to what happened after we abandoned them. Only, this time it will be much worse.
But, if Obama won’t listen and will just sacrifice our Troops needlessly, better to pull them out and wait until we have another strong leader with America’s best interest at heart. I only hope we can survive if that’s what it comes down to.
