The Wyden-Bennett plan seeks to achieve universal coverage by creating a new private insurance system for the United States. It would establish state-based purchasing pools, with nearly all Americans (except those in Medicare and the military) required to enroll in a private insurance plan made available through their states pool. Employer-based coverage would likely be reduced substantially over time (few, if any, small employers likely would continue to offer coverage although a number of large employers probably would do so, at least initially), and Medicaid and SCHIP would be converted into supplemental insurance programs that wrap around the private insurance plans offered through the new pools. Premium subsidies would be provided on a sliding scale based on income to help make the coverage provided through the new purchasing pools affordable for low- and moderate-income families.

An oldie. What do you think?
What do I think? It is still creeping socialism.
The only reform I would approve is medical tort reform combined with nation-wide access to medical insurance for all; and then making everyone’s medical insurance tax deductible. THEN the government moves to help indigents and the truly poor with access to medical insurance.
The only medical care a person without medical insurance can receive at an ER would be first aid, then out the door.
Forcing people to buy govt-approved health insurance is a little too Stalinist for my taste.
Not to mention that requiring plans to be as good as federal blue cross will cost a fortune. People who only want catastrophic insurance should be able to buy it without the govt telling the insurer that the policy does not meet federal standards.
This is the bill everyone should be looking at as it was a bicameral submission:

Senators Coburn, Burr and Representatives Ryan, Nunes Offer A Better Path Forward on Health Care Reform
Bicameral Coalition of Reformers Unveil The Patients Choice Act of 2009
WASHINGTON Earlier today, U.S. Senators Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) and Richard Burr (R-NC) and U.S. Representatives Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Devin Nunes (R-CA) introduced health care reform legislation that delivers on the shared principles of promoting universal access to quality, affordable health care, and does so without adding billions of dollars in new debt or taxes.
The Patients Choice Act of 2009, transforms health care in America by strengthening the relationship between the patient and the doctor; using choice and competition rather than rationing and restrictions to contain costs; and ensuring universal, affordable health care for all Americans. The Patients Choice Act promotes innovative, State-based solutions, along with fundamental reforms in the tax code, to give every American, regardless of employment status, age, or health condition, the ability and the resources to purchase health insurance. The comprehensive legislation includes concrete prevention and transparency initiatives, long overdue reforms to Medicare and Medicaid, investments in wellness programs and health IT, and more.
