Referendum on Obama looms in Virginia (All is not well for Obama or the Dems)
American Thinker ^ | 9/25/2009 | Thomas Lifson

Posted on 09/25/2009 10:14:17 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Kim Strassel of the Wall Street Journal lays out the evolution of Virginia's Nov. 3 election for governor into a virtual referendum on Obama (my term, not hers). It is not going well for Obama, or for the Democrats' nominee, Creigh Deeds, despite a massive inflow of resources from unions and other Democrat moneybags. He has been successfully tied to Obama, to his visible discomfort.

Blue dogs are watching closely. If Deeds loses, there will be a stampede away from ObamaCare. The stakes have become critical for the Obama administration. If Obama doesn't get some form of legislation passed by Nov. 3, and Deeds loses, he may never get it. And that makes the rest of his ambitious plan to transform the American political economy less likely to be realized. Enter a savvy Republican office seeker. Strassel writes:

His opponent, Republican and former state Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, made a big bet early on that the very Virginia voters who last year helped Mr. Obama win the state today have grave doubts about his agenda, and are wary of making the same mistake. Mr. Deeds has played right into his hands.

There is a hilarious picture from AP of Deeds recoiling as Obama reaches out to embrace him. Any Republican manifesting similar body language would immediately be branded a racist, of course.

McDonnell was slimed with a twenty year old paper he wrote in college critical of feminism and homosexuality, and went from a polling margin lead of 15 points to 5. Much of his loss came from independent women. But he says his views have changed, and he has a month and a half to convince people disturbed by Obama that he is not a fundamentalist boogyman. (If only the media were equally interested in unearthing Obama's college papers!)

As Virginia goes...

Hey, it’s time for more popcorn then.

So then, with all the fighting about Obamacare, we’ll see these election results before Congress votes on Obamacare. Yep, will be interesting to see what Democrats do, starting the morning of Nov. 4th.

If there's one thing I hate, it's a political weathervane. C'mon McDonnell, you either stand by what you believe or lose our respect.

Deeds is running as a Republican. That’s why the numbers are closer now. His ads talk about all the Republicans that support him (none named) and all the taxes he will cut.

I think the RATS will have a much harder time turning out their base. Deeds is hardly their dream candidate, ACORN is barely hanging on to life, and there is no reason to expect students to vote with the intensity they did last year.

Exactly. If I were McDonnell, I would say, “What? You think families are stronger, now, since women started working in large numbers? Really?”

Not a chance.

+=====twenty year old paper he wrote in college critical of feminism======+

How come the word “Feminism” seems so bold, courageous and nice? Gosh, feminists are basically “Anti-Men”....How come “Male chauvinist” sounds bad? It’s the same thing but for men.

“If Obama doesn’t get some form of legislation passed by Nov. 3, and Deeds loses, he may never get it.”

DING!, DING!, DING!!! We have a winner!!!

You can bet that the Obama sycophants are polling daily, and can see what is going on in the countryside. Healthcare is the KEYSTONE to taking over control of the US Economy, and never giving it back. There is a REASON the last thing you will here out of Obama’s mouth is JOBS...

True. But how many of us haven’t changed our views at all since we were 20?

. . . or at least learned to express them less ham-handedly? ;-)

Obama wrote a paper in collage as well, but for some reason no one has ever seen it. Go figure?

One of the local state legislature races here in Northern Virginia features advertisements from the ‘Rat candidate showing the Republican candidate next to Karl Rove, and then George Bush and then Tom Delay and then John Ashcroft. (Both the ‘Rat and Republican candidates are women. The Republican candidate had a job in the Justice Department when Ashcroft was AG.)

I’m surprised they didn’t show a photo of Herbert Hoover while they were at it.

A harbinger of things to come? I'll bet we'll see more of this, as Obama becomes increasingly radioactive to the Democrat party.

Or, maybe, he’s matured. I’m talking in general. I still believe a lot of what I did in college, but I’ve changed how I talk about it and I’ve grown more sensitive to differences I have with other people.

“...or at least learned to express them less ham-handedly...”

Well stated. My youngest recently introduced us to her boyfriend - their relationship has become quite serious and she admitted to us she was in love and they were talking about getting married when they finished school. When they left I remarked to my wife that “he sure is a cocky little S.O.B.”. She replied “He is exactly like you were until I trained you.” I must confess I have learned to tone myself down and be more diplomatic over the years.

For the record - I really like the boy a lot. He is a good kid. It’s just that this is my baby daughter and Dad stills sees a 4 year old tomboy who wants to be just like her Daddy - not an intelligent young woman I am really proud of.-—JM
