LOS ANGELES (AP) - Susan Atkins, a follower of cult leader Charles Manson whose remorseless witness stand confession to killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate in 1969 shocked the world, has died. She was 61 and had been suffering from brain cancer..."

Debra Tate, the slain actress's younger sister, told the parole commissioners Sept. 2 that she "will pray for (Atkins') soul when she draws her last breath, but until then I think she should remain in this controlled situation." Debra Tate noted that she would have a 40-year-old nephew if her sister had lived..."

Atkins married twice while in prison. Her first husband, Donald Lee Laisure, purported to be an eccentric Texas millionaire. They quickly divorced. Whitehouse, her second husband, is a Harvard Law School graduate and had recently served as one of her attorneys.

When they got in the house, Susan [Atkins] said that in the living room there was a man on the couch and a woman on the chair reading. Then some of Susan's group stayed in the living room, while Susan went into the bedroom where Sharon was sitting on the bed talking to Jay Sebring. They quickly put nooses over Sharon and Jay's heads so that if they moved they would choke.

Frykowski ran for the door. "He was full of blood," she said and claimed that she had stabbed him three or four times. "He was bleeding and he ran to the front part, and would you believe that he was there hollering 'Help, help, somebody please help me,' and nobody came? Then we finished him off."

"Sharon was the last to die," Susan said with a laugh as she described how Sharon was begging her, " Please don't kill me. Please don't kill me. I don't want to die. I want to live. I want to have my baby. I want to have my baby."

Susan said she just looked at Sharon straight in the eye and said, "Look, bitch, I don't care about you. I don't care if you're going to have a baby. You had better be ready. You're going to die and I don't feel anything about it...In a few minutes I killed her."

Susan said she saw that there was Sharon's blood on her hand and she tasted it. "Wow, what a trip! To taste death, and yet give life."

Just the difference in the face. I read that book a long time ago and it's pretty compelling. She doesn't make excuses for her involvement, completely accepts responsibility, and their crimes were absolutely horrific. She does paint Manson as one scary messed up dude who held hypnotic sway of some of them.

I agree with you - she deserved to die in prison but I believe her belief in God was real - no gimmick. And she spent 40 years doing everything she could from prison to prove it.

: I'm not, I wish they would have killed her and the whole Manson tribe. They should have tortured them all over a period of several days, making death as painful and as long as they could and making it public while doing so. "When police arrived at the LaBianca murder scene, they found various words written in blood. On the living room walls, there was "rise" and "death to pigs." Carved into Leno LaBianca's stomach was "war." Alone these seem to give no clue, but another writing on the refrigerator did. It was the incorrectly spelt "healter skelter." This led some investigators to believe the writings may have been influenced by the so-called "White Album" by the Beatles which included the song "Helter Skelter." Another song on the album, "Blackbird," used the word "arise" which may have inspired the bloody use of "rise."

The phase "death to pigs" was likely inspired by the Beatles' song "Piggies." Had police made the connection, they would have realized that "pig" was used in the previous murders at the Gary Hinman and Sharon Tate houses. At Hinman's, bloody writing said "political piggie" while "pig" was written at the Tate house."

It is not for me to judge — that is between her and God. But jailhouse conversions are, shall we say, convenient.

Her particular behavior in the Tate killings was crueler than anyone but charlie’s — some things are too terrible to forgive. God, in His infinite wisdom may do so. Most of us can and should not.

Something too many people forget. We only have one life, ONE LIFE on this earth and Sharon never got to live hers fully. I believe she went to heaven, but there is something poignent about how she is in eternal bliss, all needs met, but there’s something about living on earth and experiencing the feeling of comfort that warm socks, jammies, and good food bring in their own unique way.

I hate loathe, and despise the Manson family psychos for what they did. I don’t believe she died truly remorseful and you don’t just swtich from butcher to child of God in such a short time. If she was truly repentent, she would have been willing to live out her sentence. BUs instead she tried to get out time and time again.

Someone that messed up and easily led to the point of butchering those innocent people should be refused parole because if some other madman gets them under his control, she could easily end up killing again.

If she fully understood her crimes, why did she want to be let out. Why didn’t she accept with resignation what she had done and live out her sentence without appealing for parole? It sounds like she was trying to have it both ways and God doesn’t allow that. One way or another. Either want out and believe she should be exempt from fulfilling her sentence or accept God’s grace, what she did, and then live out her life in prison without asking for anything other than being allowed to live her life after taking that of others.
