The Richard Scrushy vehicle auction will go ahead as planned today.
The former HealthSouth Corp. chief executive’s 19 valuable vehicles will be sold at noon at Weil Wrecker Service, 3400 Second Ave. South, in Birmingham.
The jailed former corporate titan tried Wednesday to get the auction postponed. His lawyers argued at a hearing in Jefferson County Circuit Court that the auction was improperly advertised and is being held at an improper place. Judge Allwin Horn rejected both arguments.
That means high-dollar cars will be up for sale to the highest bidder. The collection includes a Rolls-Royce, two Porsche sports cars, a Bentley and sport-utility vehicles.
The Jefferson County sheriff’s office, which is conducting the auction, said Wednesday it expects as many as 500 bidders to register today at Weil Wrecker. Prospective bidders must register first. Inquiries have come from car aficionados nationwide.
They vehicles are being sold to satisfy a $2.8 billion court judgment against Scrushy. He was ordered to pay Birmingham-based HealthSouth that amount in June after losing a civil trial during which he was found responsible for the long-running accounting fraud that almost forced the health care company into bankruptcy.
Scrushy, 57, is in federal prison in Texas after being convicted of bribing former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.
Scrushy was recently ordered to pay $2.9 billion for defrauding HealthSouth when he was CEO.
Many well known media outlets reported the story,while they "mentioned" the fact that Scrushy is currently in jail, they almost always "forgot" to state that Scrushy is in prison for bribing Democrat Gov. Don Siegleman.
One has to wonder why. Does it not mesh with the media produced fantasy that Karl Rove was responsible for Gov. Siegleman's prosecution?

I think it was actually “66 Goat” which was the year the car was made, and if I remember correctly, the nickname for the GTO was Goat?
Another thought this brings to my mind, and is completely off topic, but where are all the muscle cars??
Where are all the cars guys used to buy and fix up and roar around in?
Back in the day, having a new car wasn’t half as cool as having a muscle car that you had fixed up yourself!!

Seems like if they thought this was true, they’d be going to bat for Scrushy as well.

Not exactly a major classic car collection. The ‘29 Caddy and the GTO are drool-worthy. Maybe the Mercury, if it’s a ragtop with the OHV V8. But the rest are really nothing extraordinary.
Not anything on Par with Jay Leno, to be sure.
But for a small time boy from Selma, Al, I bet it was big.
The sad thing about Scrushy was that he had so much potential, and he p*ssed it all away to destroy everything he ever touched.
