NYPD might have inadvertently tipped off Denver terror suspect
The Associated Press ^ | September 22, 2009 | Devline Barrett and Tom Hays

If Najibullah Zazi had any doubts he was a prime suspect in a terror investigation, authorities say, they were quickly erased by a local imam.

"They came to ask me about your characters," the Queens imam, Ahmad Wais Afzali, told Zazi in a Sept. 11 phone conversation, according to a secret recording. "They asked me about you guys."

The "they" referred to in a recently unsealed criminal complaint were New York Police Department detectives who had considered Afzali a reliable ally. At least one works for a division that operates independently from an FBI-run terrorism task force.

Afzali's alleged tipoff has fueled questions about whether the NYPD, without the FBI's knowledge, inadvertently helped blow the surveillance of Zazi by reaching out to the imam and compromised a bomb plot probe at a sensitive stage.

The complaint also suggests investigators may have tipped off Zazi, a 24-year-old Denver airport shuttle driver, by covertly towing and searching a rental car he was using on a trip to New York City that heightened fears of an attack.

The maneuver, authorities say, produced evidence of bomb-making instructions retrieved from a hard drive on Zazi's laptop.

But it also apparently didn't get by the suspect: In the same conversation with Afzali, Zazi said the car's disappearance convinced him he was being watched.

The FBI screwed up 9/11. As the NYPD points out, it’s better to err on the too soon side rather than on the too late side.

Exactly. Moussouai’s laptop, which they had in-hand but were “afraid” to examine prior to 9/11.

the feds would rather let them carry out attacks and then go after the surviving terrorists. the feds need ‘proof’ and ‘evidence’ and that usually means people have to die first before a case can be made. wouldn’t want to violate any civil rights!

Sure, but what's that got to do with the fact these moron cops went to a friggin Imam of all people to ask about a suspected terrorist's character? It is a beautiful illustration of just how self destructive our multicultural crap is, and how stupid we are to believe there are good muslims and bad muslims, and we can trust the "good" ones. Go to an imam to inquire about a suspected islamic terrorist's character? Right, that's the way to go.

it was thought that he was reliable. he had given info before. and this was not some street cop who knocked on this guy's door.

these are some of the finest detectives on the planet working under orders from some very high ranking nypd officials.

Well, now they know the imam’s a traitor/jihadist too. Running this as a law enforcement exercise instead of as a national security issue is a big part of the problem. Imams and mosques seem to be the nexus of the cancer.

This is really very simple. Islam IS a conspiracy. Learn from 1492. If it is a mosque, close it. If it is a Muslim, expel it. If it is a Koran, burn it.

Yes, that’s why I put the word “afraid” inside quotes, because it was a matter of excessive caution + bureaucratic bungling + legitimate legal reasons.

It seems there are about 20 guys on the loose, ready to kill us.

It also seems the arrested guys are not talking.

Did we change interrogation tactics? In the past these guys talked. What changed? Why aren't they talking?
