Writing in the Orlando Sentinel, Jeremy Levitt, “associate dean for International Programs and a distinguished professor of international law at Florida A&M University College of Law in Orlando,” makes this case at the conclusion of a rambling attack on critics of ObamaCare and the right in general: I would remind the far right what the Apostle Paul wrote, " ... there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." Hence, Obama is the U.S. president and leader of the Free World because he was appointed by God. I wonder how much criticism this statement will encounter on the left, from the militant atheists and church-haters?

Just for the record, the “authorities appointed by God” were Kings.... the verses are very true of course. However, the situations referred to in the Bible were not those of a free republic where people went to the polls and elected their officials. Rome was a republic to begin with but after much battle, it was overtaken and although referred to as a republic it was in fact not one. We can’t go to the polls and elect a clown and say “God put him there to be our authority.”

Then the same logic applied to Pres. Bush. Was the good professor making this argument back then? I don’t think so. In fact, using this logic, George III was appointed by God, and the Colinists were apostates for rebelling against him. To go further, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot etc were appointed by God. Does he really believe this? He’s have to in order to make his case.

So according to the Pauline tenet of leaders being appointed by God and of people in a nation being under obligation to obey those leaders, are you saying that Hitler was appointed by God and that the German people had to obey him?
I believe Dietrich Bonhoeffer has a far better theological interpretation of these Pauline principles.
