I am saying that Conservatives did not support McCain.
There are more Republicans than Democrats in many of the states McCain lost. He ran against a socialist and that still didn't keep him from losing many of the states Bush won in 2004.
McCain lost all of these states (which had previously gone at President Bush):
North Carolina
Colorado
Pennsylvania
Iowa
New Mexico
Virginia
Florida
Indiana
Nevada
Ohio
McCain had trouble raising money to the point that local races were starved so that the GOP could fun his campaign.
McCain didn't have enough campaign workers in most states.

Spend a few minutes with that map, running the bar between 2004 & 2008. See all those states which were red in 2004 turn blue in 2008? Those pretty colors represent conservatives who didn't support McCain.
Conservatives did not support McCain.
Why fight the enemy when you have become them?

3)Conservative opposition to Immigration
Of course, these same geniuses, I sure, would have said the same thing going into the Republican gubernatorial primary in Virginia, where social conservative Bob McDonnell emerged victorious. Yet, despite the emergence of a hardcore socially conservative college thesis, he currently maintains a comfortable lead in the polls.
And, never mind, of course, all polls in recent months show a swing in the pro-life direction with Gallup showing a majority being pro-life.
