The Veterans Day parade that will be held in Homestead later this year will be missing one controversial symbol: The Confederate battle flag.
That's because organizers decided to ban the flag from the parade after much back-and-forth debate. For some, the flag is a symbol of Southern pride. But others say it's a symbol of the country's racist past.
Initially, the organizers the Homestead/ Florida City Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee had agreed to allow the flag. But they reversed that decision on Wednesday after Jeffrey Wander, the committee chairman, said he sent out emails asking for people's opinions. A majority said he should ban the flag.
I hope this veterans' day parade tanks. Hold an alternative one somewhere else.

I don’t do parades much anymore, too much PC intrusion.
99% of those Klansmen were Democrats. Maybe even Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia) was among them.
Well, they could carry the 1st, 2nd or 3rd National.
“But others say it’s a symbol of the country’s racist past.”
####
And Obama and his Administration are a palpable and active sign of the country’s racist PRESENT.
Can we abolish him, too?
The Marxist have this consistent theme of shutting down speech they don’t like. Wonder how many “conservatives” also support this?

Hmmm . . . I don’t fly the Confederate flag, and I don’t fly the 1860 Union flag. I prefer the 50-state stars and strips, which I fly every day.
Just my own preference.
The Bonnie Blue Flag would probably be better.
99% is probably a low-ball estimate. :)
They need to include this in their parade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjOIFGrYtaE
The Gay Pride flag is welcome but the Southern Pride flag is banned. Typical. Is that homophobic or racsist or anything on my part? Sure don’t want to offend anyone.
NEXT UP: All references to heroic soldiers from WW2 to be banned. Why? Because they smoked cigarettes!
How about this for a compromise. All those veterans that fought for the Confederacy are welcome to carry the Confederate flag in the parade. 8^)

I prefer this one anyway.

Can't go wrong with this one, either.
Good thing that flag never had any slaves working under it..
Federal Judge has recently upheld ban on Confederate symbols in schools in SOUTH CAROLINA!!

The 13th Amendment freed the slaves and the 16th re-enslaved us. :)
Is there a side-by-side list somewhere of what the right has banned vs. what the left has banned in the past few years? Seems like they are very into banning and shutting up others and other points of view and particular words, etc.
I didn't see the movie, but from this clip, it looks like some PC crap (no Stars and Bars) being portrayed as "history" in film.
This was taken from the 11/3/06 issue of the Okinawa Marine, which is published by the Consolidated Public Affairs Office of Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler. It was written by Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joe D. Haines.
How the Confederate Stars and Bars Made its Way to Okinawa
Only the Normandy D-Day invasion surpassed Okinawa in its scope, preparation and forces employed. More than 548,000 Americans participated in the Okinawa invasion. American service members were surprised to find virtually no resistance as they stormed the beaches on Easter 1945. They soon discovered that the Japanese Imperial Army
and Navy had literally gone underground having spent a year forcing Okinawan slaves to dig their underground defenses. It required 83 days of combat to defeat the Japanese.
The invasion of Okinawa was by the newly organized American 10th Army. The 10th, commanded by Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, was composed of the XXIV Corps, made up of veteran Army units including the 7th, 27th, 77th, and 96th Infantry divisions, and the III Amphibious Corps, with three battle-hardened Marine divisions, the 1st, 2nd, and
6th.
One of the most significant milestones in the Okinawan campaign was the taking of Shuri Castle, the underground headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army. After two months of fighting the Japanese, the 6th Marines and
the Armys 7th Division were moving south, nearing Shuri Castle. The 6th Marines were commanded by Maj. Gen. Pedro del Valle. Following a hard fight at Dakeshi Town, del Valles Marines engaged in a bloody battle at Wana Draw.
Wana Draw stretched 800 yards and was covered by Japanese guns from its 400-yard entrance to its narrow exit. The exit provided the key to Shuri Castle. The Japanese were holed up in caves the entire length of the gully, and had to be eradicated in man-to-man combat.
While the Marines battled through the mud and blood up the draw, the Armys 77th Division was approaching Shuri from the east. To the west, the 6th Marines were pushing into the capital city of Naha. Faced with this overwhelming force, Japanese Gen. Ushijimas army retreated to the south. On May 29, 1945, A Company, Red Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, commanded by Capt. Julius Dusenberg, approached to within 800 yards of Shuri Castle. The castle lay within the zone of the 77th Infantry Division, known as the Statue of Liberty Boys. However, Gen. Ushijimas rear guard had stalled the 77ths advance.
Impatient, Maj. Gen. del Valle ordered Capt. Dusenberg to take that damned place if you can. Ill make the explanations.
Dusenberg radioed back, Will do!
Dusenbergs Marines stormed the stone fortress, quickly dispatching a detachment of Japanese soldiers who had remained behind. Once the castle had been taken, Dusenberg took off his helmet and removed a flag he had been carrying for just such a special occasion. He raised the flag at the highest point of the castle and let loose with a rebel yell. The flag waving overhead was not the Stars and Stripes, but the Confederate Stars and Bars. Most of the Marines joined in the yell, but a disapproving New Englander supposedly remarked, What does he want now? Should we sing Dixie?
Maj. Gen. Andrew Bruce, the commanding general of the 77th Division, protested to the 10th Army that the Marines had stolen his prize. But Lt. Gen. Buckner only mildly chided Gen. del Valle, saying, How can I be sore at him? My father fought under that flag! Gen. Buckners father was the Confederate Gen. Buckner who had surrendered Fort Donelson to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1862. The flag flew only two days over Shuri Castle when it was formally raised on May 31, 1945. Dusenbergs flag was first lowered and presented to Gen. Buckner as a souvenir. Gen. Buckner remarked, OK! Now, lets get on with the war! Tragically, just days before Okinawa fell, Gen. Buckner was killed by an enemy shell on June 18, 1945, on Mezido Ridge while observing a Marine attack.
They want to USE it to furtner their reverse-racist agenda (more goodies given to them and their constituents, up to and including reparations).
Besied USING it, they also want to REVISE it in concert with their white left-wing comrades who feel white guilt over long past history.
I say, "SCREW THEM" (and... "THEY LIE!").
Plus it turns out many of them were white! The horrors.
Just my own preference.
Amen brother.
I am an American. Flying any flag from the Confederacy side-by-side with the Ensign is cognitive dissonance.
1) Where in the article does it say that there will be "gay pride" flags?
2) Two wrongs do not make a right.
LOL.
Kinda my earlier point. Good show.
Flying that outside my porch right now.
The stars and stripes also flew while slavery was legal in the United States and the confederacy didn’t exist. I guess they just don’t want to remember that part.
“....many of them were white!”
It’s even worse. MOST of them were white! WW2 was RACIST!
Yes....the Stars and Bars were used in the movie. That was just one segment showing the Bonnie Blue. I didn’t pay much attention to the actors or I should say, who they were. I liked the way the Civil War was presented.
Well, no, the European war was just one bunch of white European males (US, British, Russian) fighting another (German, Italian) so what’s the diff? Now the Pacific war was whites (US, Aussies, Zealanders) battling a minority, but it was Asians (The Only Minority It’s OK To Discriminate Against — tm), so that’s OK too.
Wait, wait, just had a flash here — (warning: advanced post-liberal thought process engaged) — If only one side in a conflict is white, it’s obviously racist, right? So if BOTH sides are white, you’re correct, it’s TWICE as racist!
“Well, no, the European war was just one bunch of white European males (US, British, Russian) fighting another (German, Italian) so whats the diff? Now the Pacific war was whites (US, Aussies, Zealanders) battling a minority, but it was Asians (The Only Minority Its OK To Discriminate Against tm), so thats OK too.”
You forgot the French. US, British, Russian fought Germans, Italians, and French(Vichy). There were thousands of British soldiers who fought and were held POW in the PTO.
The French don't count. Fighting the French is like playing badminton with Stephen Hawking.
There were thousands of British soldiers who fought and were held POW in the PTO.
I thought of that just after I hit post.
I wasn’t talking about that parade in particular, just about the liberals way of thinking. Sheesh, Freepers are getting so quick to jump on every little thing people say. Quit looking for trouble where there isn’t any.
I haven't seen that movie, but I have recently seen the movies Gettysburg and that one - Gods and Generals, in a low-priced double package.
Have you seen both, and if so, think they're worth buying?
The Gay Pride flag is welcome but the Southern Pride flag is banned.
This was your statement.
Nothing in that statement implies that it was a hypothetical example of liberal tendencies. There was nothing there that made me think this was not the case. In fact, that is why I went to the article and re-read it and searched.
Next time make your points more clearly if you want to avoid be questioned.
And BTW, my 2nd point is valid as well - two wrongs do not make a right.
There is a series of three. I haven’t seen the third one yet. Start with Gods and Generals, then Gettysburg, then the third one. I can’t remember the name of the third one but it’s on the DVD box. The movies are very well done. Long but worth the time. I think that what you have to do is forget the liberal actors that show up in the movie from time to time and watch the content.
