Police have cordoned off an area in Scarborough after a suspicious package was found in a car parked outside a tow truck company, located close to a propane cylinder.
The area they have cleared stretches nearly two kilometres in all directions from the site of the discovery, at 2671 Markham Rd. It is bordered by Finch Avenue, Tapscott Road, Middlefield Road and Morningside Avenue.
Police were first called to William's Car Towing at about 1:30 p.m. with reports of a suspicious substance in a vehicle on Monday afternoon.
Const. Wendy Drummond says there is the "possibility of an explosion" as there is a propane tank located close to the vehicle in question. She is warning anyone in the "danger zone" to leave as quickly as possible and says officers are going door-to-door to let residents know about the order.
"If you work or live in this immediate area... please leave the area," she told CP24. "Anyone who is planning on travelling into the area, please don't."
Cars filled area streets as people tried to get away from the site following the evacuation order.
A hazardous materials team is on the scene.
Police have set up a command post and are speaking to someone they believe to be directly involved in the incident. They say their investigation into the nature of the substance has been difficult as a number of things are "not adding up."
ROP or LTTE? In that part of town it could be either.
Probably somebody’s lunch.

I guess I’m not going to Scarborough Fair, after all.
GOOD.
That spineless, worthless RINO on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" has ALWAYS been FULL OF SHIITE.
Thank you Velveeta.
Just how big was this “package”? It must be quite large to clear out a big area like that.
Scarborough, a.k.a. Scarberia and Scarbladesh. Could be anything. We have several customers in the rough vicinity (and I do mean rough), so I hope it all ends well.
No word on the size of the “package”, but it’s parked near a large propane tank. Google “Sunrise Propane” and you’ll understand why they’re antsy.
Scarborough is a Third World hellhole thanks to liberal immigration policies.
Its a mighty big lunch pale...
There was once no there there in Scarborough.
Now the there there is what no sane man would want there.
Yeah, me too. My cambric shirt i.s still in the wash.
Toronto police bomb squad technicians have entered a cube van next to a large propane tank on Markham Rd. as thousands of people continue to be evacuated from a primarily industrial neighbourhood in northeast Scarborough.
Businesses and residences, including apartment buildings, have been emptied in an area bordered by Steeles Ave. to the north, Finch Ave. to the south, Morningside Dr. to the east and Middlefield Rd. to the west.
“Our concern is the potential for an explosion,” said Const. Wendy Drummond, noting that the vehicle contains explosive substances. “Within that area there are combustible materials, and this is what is causing us great concern.”
Drummond told reporters that the red van was towed from an Eglinton Ave. E. address to Williams Towing Co. at 2671 Markham Rd, just north of Finch Ave. E.
Police then learned that “there was a substance in the car that could cause an explosion,” and it is next to a large propane tank, Drummond said.
The owner of the cube van has spoken at length with police bomb technicians but is not under arrest, she added.

LOL You’ll have to get your spices from Mrs Robinson then.
And the Muzzies have a problem with the Canucks since the Princess Pat Regiment handed a lot of Tallies and Queda Muzzies their tickets to the virgins.
The Toronto Film Festival is going on right now, isn’t it? How close are the Festival’s activities to the section that was evacuated - do you know?
I have a friend who flew out for the festival the other day, so I’m just curious...
Glad everything seems to be OK (seeing this really early on Tues. morning).
About 15 miles away.
