Obama's healthcare speech wins over public but senators remain skeptical
Times Online ^ | September 11, 2009 | Giles Whittell

The day after the most important speech of his presidency , Barack Obama had the satisfaction of a poll showing that one in seven Americans who watched it had changed their minds to back his health reforms. But there was little sign of a shift among the small group of senators who may decide the fate of his proposals.

While Democrats and a majority of voters welcomed a speech that demanded universal, affordable health insurance as a “moral” choice, congressional Republicans remained united in their scepticism about how Mr Obama would pay for it.

There was one possible exception — which may prove crucial as the Administration seeks the crucial 60th vote in the Senate, where Edward Kennedy’s recent death has deprived the Democrats of a solid majority.

Although Olympia Snowe, a Republican senator, said she wished that the President had ruled out the idea of a state-run insurance plan, she signalled her continued backing for a so-called public option as a fallback if private insurers failed to reform.

Such nuances in the position adopted by individual senators will, ultimately, be more important than the deafening public debate now under way in deciding the fate of a $2.6 trillion industry and the 30 million uninsured Americans for whom Mr Obama has pledged to provide affordable cover.

"a majority of voters welcomed a speech that demanded universal, affordable health insurance"

LIE ALERT!!!

I know of no evidence (and none is offered) that supports this assertion.

They must be referring to the CNN poll of "Americans" that over-sampled Democrats by 2.5 times.

“Obama’s healthcare speech wins over public”

On which planet?

Maybe in some preposterously faked CNN poll, but not in the real world.

CNN poll, nonrepresentative sample of 45% RAT, 18% GOP.

Meaningless data. Besides, you always get a blip up in the immediate aftermath. Give it a week and see what people are saying.

A CNN poll taken immediately after the speech showed a 14 per cent bounce in support for Mr Obama’s proposals, which would make it illegal for insurance companies to drop health coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions and to impose arbitrary limits on what a patient can claim.

What does “to impose arbitrary limits on what a patient can claim” mean? Was Obama saying that he is against capping legal liability (tort reform)?

Do a FreeRepublic title search on "poll" and see all the postings on the CNN poll of "Americans" (not "Likely Voters," "Registered Voters," or "Adults"), that over-sampled Democrats 2.5:1.

Tinfoil hat firmly in place...

1. Give the same speech given many times before
2. Conspire with a friendly polling/network to construct a fraudulent poll to return the desired results
3. Claim victory

Tinfoil hat off.

Sorry. I don’t believe it! It was so obvious that Dr. Death was lying that I can’t believe anyone else bought into his death care plan. We’ve got to keep the Republicans from supporting it. The RATS need to take the fall for this insanity. That’s the ONLY chance the GOP has of retaking the House and the Senate in 2010.
