Presuming that Laura, bless her heart, is sharing her husband's opinion, it explains a lot.

Evidently, GWB and his cohort in the Republican Party has always assumed that Democrats haven't changed since the fifties. They believed the US was still in "we might differ on the details, but both parties want what's best for America" and "politics stop at the water's edge" mode.

Alas, he didn't learn from his experience in Washington -- and he should've.

Accordingly, Laura is just being naive. Damn right, we've got a polarized electorate -- because half the country believes in America...and the other half believes in socialism.
