American military planes will soon be seen above Russia after a new transit agreement with the U.S. came into force. It allows America to airlift military equipment to Afghanistan via Russian airspace.

Or it could be that, in the past year, the price of natural gas went from of $13.60 to $2.66, and Russia needs every last bit of revenue it can get.
Of the two, I think Russia needed the money.
OK, it's probably both. Obama sells out the Georgians. And in addition the Russians get money. And once the Russians get their money and the price of natural gas goes up, they can renege on the deal. What a great deal for them.
