Gonzales backtracks on support of probe
Washington Times ^ | 9-3-09 | Ben Conery

ormer Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales said Thursday that his previous assertion that it was "legitimate to question and examine" charges of CIA abuses of suspected terrorists did not mean he endorsed such an investigation.

"Contrary to press reporting and based on the information that's available to me," Mr. Gonzales said during an interview Thursday with The Washington Times, "I don't support the investigation by the department because this is a matter that has already been reviewed thoroughly and because I believe that another investigation is going to harm our intelligence gathering capabilities and that's a concern that's shared by career intelligence officials and so for those reasons I respectfully disagree with the decision."

On Monday, Mr. Gonzales told The Washington Times radio program that he understood Attorney Eric H. Holder Jr.'s inquiry would look at "the 1 percent of actors who went beyond the legal limits prescribed by the lawyers at the Department of Justice."

"We obviously worked very hard during the Bush administration to establish ground rules to establish parameters about how to deal with terrorists, because we're a nation of laws, and if people go beyond that, I think it is legitimate to question and examine that conduct to ensure people are held accountable for their actions, even if it's action in prosecuting the war on terror and trying to protect America."

If this administration is worried about blowing smoke in a prisoners face, they are looking to accomplish something else. They would prefer that we turn all prisoners of war over to the UN.

I think when the CIA refused to send them any more documents they realized they were going to have a fight. Also the “bash the CIA” was not playing well in the press, except for the few moon-bats who Obama already had in his pocket. The threat of an investigation did its job in distracting the press. Now they have school propaganda and the rantings of green commissar Vladimir Ilyich Johnson to keep the pundits busy they don't need the CIA any more.

Once all of the corrupt politicians in DC have been arrested, where on earth are we going to house them?

Gonzales continues to show his incompetence even after he leaves office. He should have kept his mouth shut rather open it (in the first statement) and show everyone his incompetence and have to finally get it right with this second statement.

Gonzales was typical of the Bush appointees. They were so eager to make nice with the Dems that they would agree to just about anything...and it’s obviously a habit that dies hard. Keeping their mouths shut also seems to be an impossibility for them.

I should have specified, btw, that I meant the second round of Bush appointees. He initially had some pretty good ones, but in an attempt to ingratiate himself with the Dems, he stopped supporting them and finally we wound up with the likes of Gonzales.

WTH was it about GWB & his father that they were able to do some good on a few things and yet really did not seem to ever maintain any real principles? He baffles me to no end...but Gore or Kerry were the only alternatives...yuk!

I don’t know, the Bush’s were definitely mystifying. As you say, there were good things about both of them...but when push came to shove, they seemed to lack the courage of their convictions.

Well, except for GWB and Iraq; he actually did stand firm on that. But they were both very weak domestically.

"Richardson tries to put probe behind, but feds won't let him "

two thread titles in a row that sound painfully indicative of the plan from the masters...

Why would we be housing them, long term? They've been "waging war" against the Constitution, which is, in effect "waging war against the United States". *THAT*, by definition of the Constitution, is Treason. That is, still, if I recall correctly, a capital offense...
