It's interesting that the Iranians sought to smuggle in replacement parts for the J85 rather than build them or design an engine on their own. I'd expect Iran to be unable to replicate or replace high-end items like the avionics in the F-14 Tomcats they have. You would think they'd be able to manufacture spares for a jet engine whose basic design dates back to the late 1950's.
Perhaps it's just cheaper to pay scumbags like this arms dealer than to develop their own, though.
