Kennedy funeral cleaning spurs dustup

A controversy is swirling in Boston over whether the city should have cleaned-up the area surrounding Edward Kennedy’s funeral service.

The late Sen. Kennedy (D-Mass.) would have wanted the city to refrain from cleaning up the neighborhood surrounding the “Mission Church,” which attracted the eyes of the world for his Saturday funeral, says a Boston City Councilor.

“If something big happens then there’s a lot of effort to make it look really sparkling and have everybody impressed,” said Councilor Chuck Turner.

“The reality is that I think Senator Kennedy would have thought it would have been appropriate to not do anything, to carry him from the church in the conditions that were there. I think he fought all of his life against the hypocrisy that makes things look good when they really aren’t.”

Kennedy’s funeral attracted scores of lawmakers - international, federal, and local – who mixed with A-list celebrities, while news cameras shot the morning’s images around the world.

In the days leading up to the somber event, the city embarked on a cleaning spree of the surrounding Mission Hill neighborhood, which sits in the larger Roxbury community of Boston, scrubbing graffiti from buildings, cleaning trash from streets, and expediting the repair of the sidewalks in front of the Church.

But City Council President Michael P. Ross, who lives in the Mission Hill area, said he sees nothing wrong with the city trying to put its best foot forward, and likened the attention that Kennedy’s funeral drew to the 2004 Democratic National Convention, which spurred city cleaning crews to action for weeks beforehand.

“When the eyes of the world are on the city, I think it’s totally acceptable that we be shown in the best possible light,” he said.

Polluting the neighborhood with his carcass is worse than any graffiti.

WHY NOT??? Kennedy believed in spending other people's money and thinking he was doing good (and making himself look great and gain power). In fact, that is what he did for 40 years in the US Senate. He did it better than anyone else. Why stop here?

No need for a cleanup. All the rats and associated vermin will now migrate to the slimball’s grave. Likes draw likes.

Totally correct that he would have wanted the city kept as a dump and the citizens living in squalor, after all that that was the effect of his policies.

The poor live in these democrat hell holes and never get wise, keep voting dem, keep raising every tax on business and the people, keep it all an unsuccessful mess and keep thanking the wonderful democrats for giving you a handout.

Since Ted Kennedy thought it was okay to leave a trapped girl in a sinking car, why wouldn’t he think a little bit of litter here and there is a good thing? The guy just had a habit of leaving things laying around.

Lol, if that isn't a line of bull, I don't know what is!
He fought all his life trying to make himself look good, just forget Mary Jo, his college cheating and plagiarism, his carousing and excesses of food and drink. His disdain for life - other than his own.

What’s the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral?

I tend to agree with the basic premise.

Why not show Teddy's supporters in their natural habitat?

What's the big deal? The "broken window theory" isn't acceptable to all cultures, you know.

Mission Hill, until recent gentrification, has always been a dump.

BTW, Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner is notorious for holding a press conference where he displayed hoax photos of US troops raping an Iraq woman. Of course, the Boston Globe ran with the story and published a photo. The Globe later apologized:
