Weve written about this before but the new and improved version of the bills just been leaked by Jay Rockefellers office. Remember the Bush years, when the Democrats ferociously opposed executive power? Good times.
If you think theyve changed now, wait and see what happens if/when the GOP takes back Congress. Article II fee-vah!
A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the presidents power to take control of portions of the Internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept. 11, 2001. The source said that one primary concern was the electrical grid, and what would happen if it were attacked from a broadband connection
Probably the most controversial language begins in Section 201, which permits the president to direct the national response to the cyber threat if necessary for the national defense and security. The White House is supposed to engage in periodic mapping of private networks deemed to be critical, and those companies shall share requested information with the federal government. (Cyber is defined as anything having to do with the Internet, telecommunications, computers, or computer networks.)
The language has changed but it doesnt contain any real additional limits, EFFs Tien says. It simply switches the more direct and obvious language they had originally to the more ambiguous (version)
The designation of what is a critical infrastructure system or network as far as I can tell has no specific process. Theres no provision for any administrative process or review. Thats where the problems seem to start. And then you have the amorphous powers that go along with it.

The internet is not the problem. It’s the lax security of critical computers connected to the internet that’s the problem. Either such critical systems should be far more secure, or they shouldn’t be connected to the internet in the first place.
You know, if 0bey could take over the Internet, he could lower the price and make it available to everyone... just like Health Care and voting.
Anyway, it’s mandated... right there in the US Institution!
No good reason to give Obama any control over the net.
Taking over the Internet would be a very easy thing to do for Zero. There are only 7 servers that control the domain name addressing that is refreshed every 3 days.
The other 12 servers on the “Backbone” control the rest of the IP routing. If these servers are “switched off”, the rest of the Global community comes to a screeching halt.
Yeah. The Children of Chicago meet the Boys from Brazil and the Kids from Caracas.
OMG! I won’t be able to look at FreeRepublic, Freedomlighthouse, FoxNews.com, Black and Right or any of my other favorite sites. This is as scary as Obamacare.
Time to fire up the old Ham Radio gear again...
