I sit here this morning, news feeds scrolling across my magic aggregator (the death of Ted Kennedy, of course, being today's top news story...more on him later today) pondering on the implications of what successful passage of something closely resembling H.R. 3200 ("ObamaCare") might mean to the most vulnerable among us.
Now that Sarah Palin has stuck a pushpin into the section of H.R. 3200 that for all intents and purposes was a camel's nose under the tent when it comes to encouraging or actively abetting Grandma to take her blue pill and get out of the way as quickly as possible (all "for the greater good," you see) it's become clear that the two opposing sides in the debate see this argument from different points of view.
Nobody on either side is saying that those who need health care should in any way, shape or form be denied it. We're Americans, after all, and we're also the most generous, charitable and kind-hearted people on the face of the planet. This fact is beyond dispute. But the bills before us today are more about playing on our notions of fairness and desire to help the less fortunate among us in an attempt to impose statist philosophy that will tell us who may be born and who may be allowed to live, all for the convenience of the government.
They'll also -- most especially -- put a government-imposed life span on people who may not be all that willing to shuffle off this mortal coil, government resource allocation tables to the contrary. And what's so wrong with that? They want to LIVE. When did we become a nation of accountants and actuarial charts?
