The US president arrived with his family on Sunday for a week-long break on the picturesque Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard in which he hopes to devote his time to golf and his family.
However, he may also have his head down in a book for much of the time after the White House revealed he had taken five titles to read at the secluded private estate where they are staying.
It was not clear who had chosen the books but they cover the gamut of worthier tomes on history and the environment to crime novels. In total, the five books come to 2,300 pages.
At the serious end are Hot, Flat And Crowded Why We Need A Green Revolution And How It Can Renew America by Thomas Friedman and John Adams, a biography of the second US president by David McCullough. McCullough is a particularly tactful choice as he lives down the road from where the Obamas are staying.
The novels are The Way Home by George Pelecanos, a crime thriller set in Washington DC, Lush Life by Richard Price a crime thriller set in New York and Plainsong by Kent Haruf, a worthier tale about small-town life on the Colorado plains.

Any chance he’ll actually read the health care legislation?
OK, everybody better give him his privacy. Absolutely no articles about Barak’s taste in popular best sellers and self-help books, no candid but wholesome pictures of him with his family and strolling along alone with his wife and her glamorous bare arms. No pictures of visiting celebrities, none! But feel free to field questions about Obama’s healthcare plan...the week after next.
I highly doubt this guy is going to read 2,300 pages this week on anything. He an do himself a favor and read the 1,100 page health care bill. He obviously hasn’t read it. It is only half as long, twice as boring, and completely unintelligible.
Yep, it’s a Koran.
Jeez, who’d be so mean as to choke a nice pig on that pile of garbage?
Actually, he’s going to read THE LIST of books, not the actual books.
He won’t even read these novels.
AMEN! Right on Target! By the way, have You been in contact with Larry and if so, how is he surviving with the Goon Squads prowling for him! Best wishes to him for trying to help America when there was still time. If only McPain had paid attention!
Nah, he prefers to live LARGE at your expense.
Besides that legislation is for the little people and the fewer there are of them, the BIGGER he sees himself.
How about reading the Housebill. Didn’t Van Jones and Apollo Project guys write it? Not Congress.
What gives here?
I heard somewhere that his reading material is “This is spot, see spot run”,
Don’t know why they don’t publish whether he took the Charmin or is going to use the cheap Northern brand the hotel provides.
Empathizing libers just GOTTA know!
They have a puppy, a vegetable garden, go out for ice cream and he reads books while on vacation. He READS BOOKs for Gods sake... WOW, they are, oh sooo normal.
They seem to be just like the rest of us... wow..... oops, I think I fainted.
“Dreams from My Father”, because, after all, it’s about time I find out what Bill Ayers wrote about me.
“Collected Sermons of Jeremiah Wright”, because, after all, I missed all of the sermons where he cursed America and whitey.
“The Health Care Bill”. I should really find out what’s in the thing if I’m going to expound on it.
