Stevie Nicks's Band of Soldiers
Monsters and Critics ^ | Larry Rodgers

Posted on 08/22/2009 1:51:07 PM PDT by AmericanSphinx71

In late 2004, Nicks began visiting Army and Navy medical centers in Washington, D.C. While visiting wounded service men and women, Nicks became determined to find an object she could leave with each soldier that would raise their spirits, motivate, and give them something to look forward to each day. She eventually decided to purchase hundreds of iPod Nanos, load them with music, artists, and play-lists which she would hand select, and autograph them. She now regularly delivers these tokens of her appreciation, bringing her closest friends to share the experience.

In 2006, Nicks held a get-together to raise money for her charity work. Many of her peers made contributions. Nicks continues to develop this philanthropic endeavor.[48]

“ I call it a soldiers' iPod. It has all the crazy stuff that I listen to, and my collections I've been making since the '70s for going on the road, when I'm sick...Or the couple of times in my life that I have really been down, music is what always dances me out of bed. „ —Stevie Nicks, The Arizona Republic

“ So, as Mick [Fleetwood] and I went from room to room delivering their tiny iPod, they told us their stories. Mick became his tall, loving, father figure, English self, taking in every word they said, remaining calm (at least on the outside) inspiring them. We floated from room to room down thru the halls of the 2 hospitals over a three-day period. We gave out all our iPods. Right before I left for D.C., Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry dug into their pockets and came up with $10,000 for me. In my eyes they went from the coolest rock stars to generous great men; as my press agent Liz Rosenberg said, every returning wounded soldier should be given an iPod. It will be an integral part of their recovery.„ —Stevie Nicks, Journal Entry

Found this little section on Stevie Nicks Wikipedia page.

I don't know her politics, but this is a cool thing she does for our wounded soldiers.

You can be assured that as we speak, some intrepid FReeper (with entirely too much time on their hands) is scouring the internet for every political uttering of Nicks, Fleetwood, et.al., just looking for something to hold against them.

It always happens. But I never let it change my impressions of the great work these people did.

Good job Stevie.

I like Stevie Nicks and I don’t know much about her politics either. However, she has always supported and cared about our military people. At least since “Operation Desert Angel” during the first Gulf War. Unlike so many other entertainers, she believes in something other than herself. Although she is not as popular as she once was, I still buy and listen to her stuff when it is released.

If not for Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, most of us would never have heard of Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham's special style of playing guitar and Nick's unique voice are my memories of Fleetwood Mac.

Yes, they were lovers and many of the songs on their album Rumours is about their emotional breakup.

Go Your Own Way

Yes, Nicks did have an affair with Mick Fleetwood

Stevie Nicks is a hard act to follow
Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

August 23, 2009 12:00am

SUPERSTAR Stevie Nicks will not allow Lindsay Lohan to play her in a planned Fleetwood Mac biopic.

“Lindsay cannot be me until she gets her life together,” Nicks, 61, told the Sunday Herald Sun. “If I were to do a movie, or allow a movie about my life, Lindsay Lohan is not the person I would pick to do it.

“She has got completely off track. She has a bad reputation. She is a party girl.

“I would want somebody who is an excellent actress and dedicated to their craft.”

Fleetwood Mac is swamped by movie offers and Nicks has picked the actor to play her.

“I want Reese Witherspoon to play me,” Nick said. “Reese knows. She would play Stevie Nicks really well.”

Nicks can relate to the traps snaring Hollywood’s new brat pack.

She once released a solo album, Trouble In Shangri La, about the perils of celebrity and fame.

“I look at Miley Cyrus and wonder how she can keep it up because she is everything,” Nicks said. “She is a singer, an actress, a dancer, a song writer. She is very famous. And she’s only 16.”

Nicks knows Miley’s father, singer-actor Billy Ray Cyrus, keeps his daughter on track.

“He’s a good old boy. He’s tough as nails underneath that sweet smile,” she said.

Nicks said Paris Hilton should not be rated alongside Cyrus, Lohan or Britney Spears.

“Paris is an heiress. She has so much money, she never has to work a day in her life,” Nicks said.

“But she has purposely chosen to build an empire. So God bless her.”

But Nicks gave her strongest support to Spears.

“I love Britney and I want the best for her,” Nicks said. “She has got her life back and she has two boys who need her.

“But Britney has her body back, her beauty back and, hopefully, she will get her power back.”

Fleetwood Mac performs at Rod Laver Arena on December 1. Tickets go on sale on September 4.

"Any one of them could be my own child."..."You can't help falling in love with every one of them."...said Nicks.

No truer words have been spoken. Unlike most of Hollywood, she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk.

We all made mistakes during our younger days. Shoot, I voted for McGovern and Carter before I saw the light, and boy did I see the light!

In the 1980 election, my neighbors in the small German town I lived in were pleading with me to vote against Reagan. They were so sure that RR was going to start WWIII. Lucky for me that my German was proficient at that point, as I gave them a lesson in American civics and nuclear policy.

Was I effective? Shortly after the election, I was invited to sit at the stammtisch of my neighborhood gasthaus, a table reserved for family/friends of the family. Of course, I'm sure that it was more for my patronage than it was for my political views! LOL!

Back to the thread: any support given to our soldiers is appreciated. I try not to pay too much attention to politics when I'm listening to music. For example, I may vehemently disagree with David Crosby's politics, but I can't help it...Southern Cross is an awesome song.

“ast I knew, she was strung out on all sorts of drugs. Good to know she got herself together”

Stevie Nicks has always been very candid about her past substance abuses. Fortunately, she has clearly grown up and learned from her mistakes.

But this is why I really respect her. Not too many people in her industry really take much time out of her life to give back to those who have been hurt and disfigured to protect our freedom. Stevie Nicks clearly understands what these heroes have done for us.

I’ve always loved Stevie Nicks and her music. She has been actively supporting wounded soldiers since the first Gulf War. Her politics do lean to the left, but she clearly respects the views of others also.

I hadn’t heard about the iPod giveaways and I think that that is absolutely wonderful. It is nice to know that some celebrities still care about those young soldiers who go in harms way.

But you must understand, there are those around here who demand absolute ideological purity from any and all.

I recall many years ago an inspiring story of a rock star or actor doing something special, and one of the first posts was "does anybody know their position on abortion?"

The issue of the story had nothing to do with abortion, but for this person, he just had to know how this person came down on that specific issue before he was willing to give any approval.

"Mick Fleetwood and John and Christine McVie are British."

Fleetwood Mac was originally a British Band led byPeter Green, when Peter left the group the remainder moved to LA where they recruited Buckingham and got Nicks because of it.

Mick was married to one of the Boyd sisters...the other sister Jenny) was married to George Harrison and eventually Eric Clapton. Donovan, George, and Eric each wrote at least one song about Jenny. Eric met Jennifer while he was teaching George Harrison how to play (Uncredited), "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Eric fell for Jennifer, hook, line and sinker.

Bob Welch did some good work on two FM LP’s prior to Stevie and Lindsey joining in 1975. Of course he left which opened the door for history. But if you have an extra $10 to spend on some music check out FM “Mystery to Me” with Bob Welch. Some good songs like, Hypnotized, Emerald Eyes, and a few gems from Christine McVie. I think I will spin that vinyl tonight.

I don’t see a single Bible verse on this thread. Nor do I see anyone asking about her position on abortion. I only see two posts that could be construed as anything but strong support for Nicks, in spite of her politics (which aren’t as left as most would assume).

Perhaps these intolerant “purists” aren’t as rampant around here as you think. Maybe you just think all Christians act that way and feel the need to reinforce that stereotype as often as possible.

I don’t know a thing about her politics, but I’ll bet anything she will probably come down more libertarian than she even knows.
But all the politics aside, she’s giving back to those who sacrifice all on the “altar of freedom”, and she recognizes that there is something out there larger than herself to be cherished. Politics does not even come into play where that is concerned.
