Mitt Romney and the Wreckage of GOP Leadership
EXAMINER.COM ^ | 17 AUGUST 2009 | EXAMINER.COM

Posted on 08/18/2009 8:13:08 AM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was the hope of many self-described conservatives during the 2008 presidential race, and was the apparent frontrunner in an early 2012 presidential poll in New Hampshire last week. The question facing most conservatives these days is: Who is going to be the standard bearer for the conservative wing of the Republican Party into the 2010 elections and beyond?

The GOP has few genuine conservative voices left who are capable of credible leadership on a national level. While it's too early to start putting former GOP presidential nominee John McCain's face on a milk carton, any hope of a grass roots following for McCain is gone. McCain has become the “wrinkly white-haired guy” Paris Hilton called him during the campaign, and he was never much of a conservative anyway. On issues like freedom of speech (McCain-Feingold), immigration, and fiscal issues, McCain's record leaves a lot to be desired. Gone also is any hope of leadership from McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, who recently earned for herself the reputation as a “quitter.”

Mitt is as likely as anyone to be nominated.

By whom? Conservatives aren't going to support Mitt. He doesn't have any grassroots support.

I think the Dems who cross over will select Mitt in the primary, just as they selected McCain.

We don't know if that scenario will play out. The GOP may clean up its primary process or Palin may run as an independent, which negates whatever cross-over votes Dems do.

That will set the GOP up for another defeat, as the right wing stays home again, saying that Obama is better than a RINO.

Damn straight. I am not voting for another liberal Republican ever again. If Zero gets a 2nd term that's not my fault.

Palin is not a likely nominee. She’s not very popular with moderates and independents.

What groups of people do you think minds were changed by Palin's "death panel" remarks? It wasn't conservatives who already supported her. Saying that she's not popular with moderates or independents is typical liberal talking points.

The only question is, is the Republican Party tired of losing?

Sadly, no.

They seem to relish being the minority. They are good at that. They did it for 40 years. Then, they got majorities in both chamber AND the White House, and they blew it big time.

Now, they are back to minority status in both chambers and they don't have they White House.

Paint them happy campers. Sadly.

well put

I cannot recall a single name or action by any other GOP “leader” that has yet impacted HR3200

While senior citizens are being called nazi evilmongering mobs and being shoved against walls by union thugs hired to protect those few democrats who drew their party's short straws and were drafted into selling obamacare, the rest of the House of Lords is all out globetrotting on diplo and eco vacations

Did Boehner go round the world for two weeks? He reminds me of a half baked cake, you keep thinking its gonna rise but it doesn't because it's squishy inside.

If Romney runs again, it will be the same circus we had in 2008 with another unelectible candidate picked to represent the GOP. Governor Romney is not an acceptable candidate for the GOP...his candidacy just divides otherwise reasonable folks. Look at how divided FR was during the primary....Romney was a primary cause. Of course other divisive candidates bear blame as well.

Don’t you have a list of executives, instead of a bunch of Senate bloviators?

Senators do no make good executives. They do not understand ‘doing’ rather than talking about doing.

Reagan wasn’t very popular with moderates and independents at first, either. President Reagan didn’t even win the party nomination that year. He spent the next 4 years doing pretty much what Sarah Palin is...countering the left (Carter/Obama). Like Reagan, Palin is discussing ideas, not bashing people but still getting the point across. The party elite at the time were just as embarrassed by Reagan as many are with Sarah Palin today. Both shoot from the hip and could care less whether they appeal to the elites of either party.

I don’t know whether she’ll run but it’d be worth it just to see the Washington crowd get their panties all in a wad. Reagan was the first president I voted for. I was in college and thought he was SO radical compared to other politicians (including Carter). Like Rush says, the left does a better job of telling us who our standard bearer should be than we do. They’re VERY afraid of her, otherwise they wouldn’t waste their time. She actually reminds me a lot of Reagan. Besides, my son says it’d be awesome to have a CinC who’s tough but “really, really hawt”.

2 are US senators.
2 are US reps.
2 are/were gevernors.

Good mix of experience levels and skill sets. I’d be thrilled to have either DeMint or Sessions as President, senate or no senate.

Watts from Ok.

Obama will not dump Biden just to let Watts be his running mate.

With the exception of Palin, I wish EVERYONE associated with the 2008 campaign would just stay out of the presidential races. This goes for the campaign managers too.

no mccain, no steele, no rudy, no huckster, no brownback, no vp short listers, no dole(s), no whitman(s), no ANY of those leadership incompetents.

When youtube has 1960’s tape of Ronald Reagan PERFECTLY describing the evil of Obamacare, then it is time for ALL those so called leaders to sit down, shut up, and simple step aside.

Since the candidate is usually picked before the closed primaries take place, and since Obama won’t have competition for the Dem nomination - we’ll have a lot of crossover Demoncrats picking the GOP candidate. By the time Arizona votes, it will be all over.

Palin just added another reason to the super majority’s “NO WAY” voice.

Obama is now trying to “for the children” weasel and psychobable. (single payer, becomes governemnt option, becomes co-ops and other government doublspeak to gram 10% of the ecconomy and 100% of our liberty)

If Romney is the 2012, Obama will highlight all of his various flip-flops on abortion, gay marriage, and healthcare. Plus the media will focus many stories on Mormons behaving badly to link them to Romney. Blacks and liberals will not vote for a Mormon. They assume Mormons are members of the Religious Right. Ironically, a few Religious Right members are spooked by the idea of a Mormon President and may sit out the election.

He [Congressman Ted Poe] is the real deal, an ass-kicking Texan

You mean compared to that fake Texan we last had in the White House, the one born in New Haven Connecticut?

“Romney has been AWOL on the Health Care Debate.”

Of course, and the GOP doesn’t want to throw him under the bus, even though it is the easiest argument against Obamacare.

Masscare has been an epic failure, and its getting worse as the population in MA falls.
