David Cameron was fighting last night to prevent the Tories again being labelled the 'nasty party' after one of his Euro MPs denounced the National Health Service.
The Tory leader slapped down Daniel Hannan after he went on U.S. television to brand the NHS a '60-year failure' that he 'wouldn't wish on anybody'.
Hannan joined forces with U.S. critics opposed to Barack Obama's healthcare reforms. They have described the British system as evil, Orwellian and a breeding ground for terrorists.
Mr Hannan said: 'I find it incredible that a free people living in a country dedicated and founded in the cause of independence and freedom can seriously be thinking about adopting such a system.'
Mr Hannan, who has long campaigned for the NHS to be dismantled and replaced with a system of 'personal health accounts' once described the service as a '60-year mistake'.
Earlier in the week he used a speech in Washington to claim that the service was a 'Marxist system' and warned Americans to 'ponder our example and tremble'.
Roger Helmer, another Tory MEP, declared that Mr Hannan had 'done us a service' by raising his criticisms of the NHS.
'If the Americans came to me and said would you recommend us taking up a system just like the British NHS I think I would have to say "No",' he said.
Mr Cameron also faced fresh embarrassment when it emerged last night that five senior members of the shadow cabinet have close links to American politicians leading the PR offensive against the NHS.
Its American directors include congressman John Campbell, who praised Mr Hannan on Thursday and senators Jim DeMint and John Kyl, who have both used the NHS as a stick with which to beat President Obama.

I want to recruit Hannon to run for NY’s Senate seat in 2010.
cameron would be a rino in the US
But people are seeing through all of that by simply finding out for themselves.
And that is also why...hehehe...All kinds of "Fishy" posters, conversations, and emails keep showing up all over the nation.
BURNHAM FORGETS 230,000 ON LIST
HEALTH Secretary Andy Burnham was under fire last night after admitting he cared more about his favourite football team than the National Health Service.
Ooopsie.
Illustrative of the fact that once you’ve got government-run health care, you’ve got government-run health care.
Health row Tory Daniel Hannan: Why my critics are wrong about the NHS
The Conservative Euro-MP who sparked the row over the National Health Service last night hit back at his critics by branding them "fatuous" and "asinine."
Anyone who thinks socialized medicine is the cure for what ails us should be made to spend some time in a country that has it.
The article mentions the “51 year old unidentified man” who carried the anti-Obama cardboard sign. Has anyone identified him yet? Why are they going to such lengths to protect his identity?
I suspect that he was a provocateur, sent there solely to have his picture taken. And you’ll note that he was careful to hide most of his face behind the sign.
Apparently Cameron couldn’t rebut Hannan’s criticism with any substantive facts. MEP Daniel Hannan is a bigger American patriot than half of our fellow countrymen. He knows our history well and he has a remarkable appreciation for its virtues.
Mewz, I like the way the Tellegraph has British MPs blogs on their site...Hannan is very active and informative on his Telegraph site.
Nothing more, and nothing less.
Socialist says it is un-English to mention the flaws of the Utopian health care system. Just as our socialists proclaim those who reject socialized health care, unAmerican. The mental disease is global and predictable.
